Saw this on fb then about 20 minutes later saw it on the news. Apparently this NYPD officer on terrorism detail saw this man without shoes and could not ignore since it was freezing outside. He went into the store in the background and bought him some winter boots on his own dime.

Quote:
Jennifer Foster of Florence, AZ was visiting Times Square with her husband Nov. 14 when they saw a shoeless man asking for change. She writes, "Right when I was about to approach, one of your officers came up behind him. The officer said, 'I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let's put them on and take care of you.' The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man. The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching*. I have been in law enforcement for 17 years. I was never so impressed in my life. I did not get the officer's name. It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost on myself or any of the Arizona law enforcement officials with whom this story has been shared."
Our thanks to the Fosters for their attention and appreciation, and especially to this officer, who remains anonymous.
He is not anonymous anymore.

This story really got me. Have heard since I posted that the boots the officer bought for him were good ones. He paid 99 dollars for them and that was with the employee discount the manager gave him when he realized he was buying them for the man on the sidewalk. The story just gets better.

I saw that on TV last nite and it was so heartwarming to see good stuff people do instead of all the bad stuff we seem to be bombarded with all the time. Yer right, he's not anonymous anymore. Good for him. Thanks for posting it FROG. 8)

Also made it on the AOL Homepage...the pic and background reminds me of "Jamie" (Will Estes) the youngest of the Regan Police Family clan in "Bluebloods"...a young officer with a lot of compassion.

If you look at the pic that was posted and you look at "Jamie's" pic you'll see a resemblence in character and some features...

I wonder how many people, people who would trash-talk the police at every opportunity, walked past that homeless person and did nothing.

It's a great story...A nice little Christmas present in it's own right. 8)

Problem not solved.
Made me happy for about 5 seconds then realized that the homeless man is still living in the streets then made me sad again.

It's an amazing story given the cost of the boots, his salary and the fact that this guy will see this stuff day in, day out.

I hope people start channeling this into some donations for homeless shelters such as our local Downtown Emergency Service Center http://www.desc.org/

Agreed. But I am proud that NYC taxpayers willingly fund homeless shelter capacity adequate to protect every one of these folks from the elements. (I'm not saying that they are all lovely or convenient places to be in.) Laws that protect the dignity and independence of all citizens prevent the police from forcibly relocating people to these shelters. So, to whatever degree of self-government this person is capable, it is his decision to live on the street.
I know, personally, more than a few NYC police officers. Every one that I know is a gem of a human being, with uncommon compassion and understanding for their fellow humans. They make me proud to be a native New Yorker.
