Patrick, do you have, use, or have you used a Makerbot?

Nope, just have shapeways print all my items. I know of a shop near by that does printing in wax for investment casting. It's a shop that does high end components for Porsches. I was looking at that process for making one-off cylinder and head.

Yesterdays design task was making a protective case for a medical device. The larger hole in the back is positioned at the center of gravity so that it's balanced in you hand.

Abuello, if you have a minute, take front, back, top, left, right and bottom if practicle, direct on shots. So as much on-axis as possible. They would be handy at a later date as I am working on a P right now.

Thanks.

OK, can do. Although, I'm not sure when you say "on axis" what this means? Also, the stand I have it attached to will allow a verticle view as shown in this pic. You can see the rear wheel house is partially obstructed by the stand framework. Will this work, or should I remove it and stand it up, in some way to get a full bottom view.....?

Abuello, that's what I mean in the picture; direct-on opposed to angular shots.

Best practice is to use shots like that painted on working planes in the software that you can then use to line-up surfaces.

I am planning to tear-down my P this winter during the rainy season and will take pictures.i am going to quickly run out of detail as it is.

Thanks again.

If it looks like the Yamaha rd350 nylon part I saw it needs to be molded or 3d printed. I can draw it if someone sends me one and oppsclunk can print it.

Yeah Jerry, a guy who makes them actually prints them w/ a Makerbot.. I don't have one to send you... hmm maybe I can get my hands on one... That would be great... 8)
Check your inbox.. I sent you a message about a bolt too Jerry.

The "white strong flexible" material at shapeways starts to soften at ~325F. I've used it upstream of the carb with no issues. I had a manifold to fit the blaster reeds to the malossi 133 printed but have not run it. Gave it to Greasy to try out but don't think he has yet.

It would probably do fine filling the reeds as the fuel/air flow ought to keep it cool enough.

Vader, check your mail. Sounds easy.

So oops, you are really into shapeways. What is their resolution, sub mm?

detail depends on the material but generally wall thickness of .7mm and detail down to .2mm. Shapeways is nice because it's quick and easy. When I was designing the LX dogleg rear brake lever I had to balance making them look like the front brake or feel like the front, due to the difference in pivot point. I made 4 variations, loaded the files and had them in two weeks. Was able to install each on the bike to evaluate the look and feel and then start on the design of the jigs for manufacturing. Other things, like the bell mouths, are just not reasonable to make in small volumes any other way.

I'm sure there are better or cheaper 3D printers out there but the ease of dealing with shapeways makes it worth it.

I did a little more work on the front fender. More tweaking required.

This horn cover or whatever it is called is taxing my patience. Lot of work to go but when done, we would be able to 3D print it in the future as I am using parametric surfaces. I was thinking about making it with Automotive Class A surface modeling but this stuff was originally molded and shaped by hand.

By the way, this color is somewhat like one available on a minicooper that I love. What do you guys think of the color for my P200E? The white dot is an artifact of the light used.

I've always thought that the P horn cover left a lot of style to be desired...If you are going to 3D print, maybe make a stab at making a new classic? Anyone good with art? Sculpting?

Best one I ever saw had the center section of the grill removed so it was short and wide, maybe 4-5 rows in the finished one.

If the center section was round it would look better, almost like one of the older bikes but not so like a headlight cover.

Oops, that charge per CC, is that finished product as in material cost or is it X*Y*Z?

Finished product, you only pay for the material used.

I am roughing out the flywheel cover. I'll be able to assemble the bike soon which would enable me to try out different paint. This thing is a pain to model.
