(Continuation of this post: https://modernvespa.com/forum/post2345436#2345436)

So this morning I called the insurance company and they told me to have someone come out and tarp the hole, and to keep our receipts for everything, and to take pictures of everything, and that an adjuster would come out at some point in the next 3-5 days to check it out.

I called a roofer I know through work, and he sent a guy out. The guy who came out suggested leaving the limb where it was until the adjuster could see it, so that there wouldn't be a way for them to deny that the tree had caused specific damage. His rough estimate was that it would cost slightly more than our deductible. He left to get supplies, I left for work, and my wife waited.

An hour later, the adjuster called to say he was on his way. He met with the roofer, and they agreed on how much it would cost to repair the roof, fence, fascia, and to remove the tree limb. Subtract our deductible, and we'll have just enough to repair the roof, as long as I remove the branch myself (I have a chainsaw, and the city will pick it up from the curb for free, as long as the branches are less than 8' long). And any additional repair work from this claim that the roofers run across will be covered at 100%, because we'll have met our deductible for it.

So it all boils down to I get to cut up a tree this weekend, and our roof gets repaired for essentially free.

Well that worked out pretty well.

Should be short work with a chainsaw. Still on the play side of the play vs. work spectrum....

Picked up new Scoot.
Got some work in this morning.
Caught up with friends and colleagues.
400km ride home, hardly any traffic.
Only rainless day this week.
Brilliant sunset.

We had a 21 year old roof that needed replacement. Had a bad wind storm and lost some Shingles. Called USAA, they sent an adjuster out and I talked him into paying for a New Roof. I had to pay $600 to upgrade to the CertainTeed Pro shingle which is heavier/thicker and has a better warranty, 50 years instead of 25 years.. So got a new roof for $600

I do see these every day...

...or at least every Wednesday and Thursday when I work in Beverly Hills. Mostly newer ones, though.

I love it when a vintage model drives by.

Road into work for the first time since June!!!

Rode with the Scout parent that got the Kymco 150. As we were leaving our neighborhood a woman was walking a Great Dane. That thing took a LOT of interest in us as we rolled by!

As the saying goes, you don't have to outrun the Great Dane. You only have to be faster than the guy with the Kymco 150. Razz emoticon

While his Kymco did accelerate faster off the line than mine (Lighter Bike, lighter rider). My 300 could smoke him if need be. I thought about that though. If that dog broke free of the owner...VAROOOM!

I have a friend who had a Great Dane. Poor guy got put down this year at 12 years old. One thing he liked to do was eat wasps. I'm not kidding he'd just go chomping at them if they were flying around his head.

What's cheering me up today is one more day and I'm off to Tobermory and the cottage! First time up there taking an off-road bike.

I'm feeling a bit chuffed with myself. I finally bit the bullet and repaired an old cuckoo clock. The whole thing had stopped working years ago and then it fell off the wall and went for a tumble down the stairs. I couldn't just replace the clock with another because this one was given to my grandfather as a present by the son of a German POW. I was very young at the time but do have a memory of it being given to him. My grandfather used to have a number of German officers over for Christmas dinner when there was a POW camp not far from his home. It's now ticking and chiming away quite happily though the wife isn't keen on the ticking sound and won't have it on at night

I might actually remove the mechanism again and take it all apart to give it a thorough clean. If all that works then I might have a shot at doing the same thing with a grandfather clock that hasn't worked in about 50 years.

Bought my first pair of actual motorcycle boots today. I've always just worn Frye or Red Wing aa I've always had scooters and shifting was all done with the left hand. Now that I do have to clunk through gears with my foot I figured I'd try a pair. Pretty comfy actually.

This happened last night, but has kept me happy all day.

Back in August I got stopped for "failure to stop at a stop sign" by a campus cop. Last night was my court date at the municipal court where the university is.

When I arrived, the first bailiff asked for my last name. She checked her list, and I wasn't on it. So she asked for my citation, and confirmed that I was there on the correct date & time. We went up to the clerk's office, where I was told that they have me in the system as Oates, not Bates. I was instructed to tell the other bailiff that I'm Bates, but my file is Oates. He made a note of it, and I took a seat.

Because I was one of the last to arrive, I was one of the last to be called before the bench, almost two hours later. I declined to see the State's File, as I just wanted to get things over with and didn't want to have to come back, so I signed the waiver. The judge then asked the bailiff for my Court Jacket, and had me take a seat so he could deal with other defendants while we waited for my Jacket.

When it arrived, he called me back up, and looked it over. It was just two pages: a photocopy of the citation, and another typed page that I couldn't make out what it was. He looked back & forth at both several times, then asked his clerk who the officer was, she replied "SMU," and he said, "oh."

He then looked at me and asked if I wanted to move to quash. I replied that, yes, I would like to move to quash. He said, "Motion to quash submitted," and wrote "motion to quash" on the Court Jacket, and again on another sheet, followed by "granted". He handed them to his clerk, then said, "we're done. The citation is quashed. The prosecution may decide to refile at a later date, but the chances of that are about the same as the chance we'll get rain tonight."

He then said that I was that night's winner, and that I should buy a lottery ticket on my way home.

So what could have been a $200+ fine and 6-months probation ended up being nothing.

For me it was having my Vespa delivered @ 7:45 am by the service manager at my sort of local dealer.
Spongy, funky front brakes repaired , all at no cost I might add.

Then the mail arrives and I get a box from member
"flordian" containing the coolest ever hi viz back pack, with a sweet Vespa logo on it.

It's like having my recent 75th birthday all over again.

Thanks guys! Yes it is a beautiful spot and the Ural the perfect bike to bring up to it. Already using the heated grips during the day so yup it gets cold up here early. Monday morning I leave for the big island. I'll post something over in the rides report section.

Not too many moose here but lots of deer. I drove up right about at dusk and know I had to pay attention more than usual even though it was cold and I had already driven 5 hours that day. Driving a hack is more tiring than a motorcycle or scooter.

Took her out on the back roads for the first time today. Finally getting her dirty. The foot box is a blessing off-road.

I'll check out the link. I also belong to Soviet Steeds which is basically the Ural version of MV though not as busy as here.

Yes they get strapped down. We had just parked. There are plenty of grommets available for tie down and ropes provided. Lots of guys brought there own straps.

Great riding here! Taking a small break now.

Some beautiful non gravel roads but I'm sticking to the side roads. The Ural is a blast in them. I've even had to use the 2 wheel drive and it works as advertised. Got stuck in a rut and just reached over and enhanced the sidecar wheel. Got out no problem.

Anyway that was a great trip but next time I'll spend the night so I get more time. I'll post something in the ride report section when I get back next week or sooner. Cottage has decent internet. Here are a few more pics and one that surprised me. I almost never see other C650's but that's what was sitting next to me when I parked for the boarding back.
