I don't know how serious he is, know he probably no longer has motorcycles endorsement on his license, I did let him know that the easiest way in our area is take that $20 motorcycle safety class, as both my small town and those close have shrunk down their skills test areas to fit the space they have, which makes some of that stuff hard to do in such tight spaces. He's sure he wants to ride again and is sure a big Harley or similar is Not the ride he wants, been there and doesn't want to go that route. He didn't know we do fun, sometimes silly stuff like scooter rallies. I think he would enjoy some group rides that don't involve a lot of stops at bars, pubs and such but enjoying road time. He's probably got my inseam length or shorter, I have long legs for my height, like takes a 33 or longer inseam, so, he's big/broad boned, not a tall guy. He wants something he can do some of the maintenance stuff on, if he chats with me again and about scooters, I will steer him away from the newer Honda's as they are not owner friendly for even a simple oil change. That's not nice.

After 5 Covid tests in 14 days, "The Boys" (my son and SIL) have been liberated from Howard Springs Quarantine Camp and are now making dents in the beer stocks of pubs in Darwin.

Their adventure in their new country has begun.
I envy them.

The district electrician stopped by my shop last night and installed the receptacle and circuit breaker for my Canon Color printer, so I now have double the color printing capacity as before.

This brings me to two black & white printers (two Xerox PrimeLink B9100s), and two color printers (one Xerox Versant 280, and one Canon imagePress C800).

Now I just need jobs to run on them.

Did my shop after work and used that Italian 'shopping cart' I am so fond of! Racks came with the scooter, bag is hand knit from a nylon thread, and I really like the new Rok straps…

Indeed...good one!

Soo...this was Saturday, but still cheerful if that counts....

A good year or two ago I posted a picture of a Cushman for sale in my neighborhood...(well, would be, except for the freeway between us). Don't get that way too often, but a while back spotted a yellow GTS sitting outside his garage. Okay, that calls for engagement! I pass there going to our family's farm to visit my mother. Last trip was in a hurry to get back so didn't stop, though just before there got a wave of a guy riding an old, smallish MC. Good chance he was my guy.... Saturday afternoon was great weather here, and a good time to check on him. Catch him returning from riding his wife's motorcycle. The GTS is an '07 that he'd picked up pretty much stolen from someone for $500 in great condition. Got a garage tour to see his '73 Honda, Zuma and a couple of his daughter's scooters.

In a community where seeing another Vespa is anywhere between a head swivel and a turn around an chase 'em event, it's a pretty big deal. Definitely more conversation in the future....

I misplaced the spare keys to my Yamaha Zuma a month or so ago.

A couple of weeks ago I stopped at the local dealer to buy a spare.

They didn't have any. And didn't offer to order one either.

This week, I decided to try the best locksmith in town.

The guy spent fifteen minutes looking for the proper Yamaha blank, plus the top box key.

He thought he found both blanks and cut them.

I paid $11.50 and took them back to the office, tried them in the scooter and found that the top box key worked, but the scooter key wouldn't even go into the keyhole.

The next day I took the scooter back up there and told him about the non working key.

Two guys searched the board again, found the Yamaha blank and cut the key.

I went out and tried it on the scooter. It worked!

Now I won't have to worry about losing the only remaining key.

Plus, with the pressure off, I will probably find the missing set.

Bill

Edit: I found the missing keys in a drawer in my office today while looking for a battery for a computer mouse.

Work has been extremely difficult for me lately. I say "for me" because I'm not really sure the industry has changed. It may all be me, but it's had me looking hard at walking away from a 30 year career. The latest emergency had me here 12 hours Thursday and Friday plus Saturday for a disconnect at the engineering level.

But this morning, knowing what was awaiting me at work I left a few minutes early. I took the long way in.

The sky was clear and the crisp 45 degree fall air is enough for me to add winter gloves to my hands and a balaclava under my helmet. The Aprilia is a great bike in that it simply allows me to be in the moment when I'm riding. It performs so well that I don't even think about it.

The long way to work includes a quick stop at Reeds Lake allowing just enough time to get off the bike and hear the water for a minute. Standing there with Ursa Major front and left and Orion back over my right shoulder I get a good perspective about the insignificance of things that I often consider to be problems. Sometimes the best thing we can do is just stand still for a minute and listen.

I made it to work with three clock minutes to spare, made a cup of coffee and feel a bit better about facing the day. Things could always be a lot worse.

At home, we have a rescue Golden Retriever (mostly), who is nearing 13 years old.

Her name is Cooper and she enjoys long walks with Sarah and going out with us.

Over the past several months we have been taking her to Lemonstreet Brewery, one of several within a few miles of home.

There, she gets petted by almost everyone and she is becoming a regular. Several look forward to seeing her on our Saturdays out.

We like it there and will continue to visit regularly.

After the stop there last Saturday, Sarah suggested we try Bold City Brewery,. the first of the craft brew breweries in Jacksonville, founded in 2009.

We checked and Cooper was welcomed into the warehouse part of the shop, not the small taproom. We like the warehouse better anyway, so it worked.

I ordered two beers at the bar and was told I owed $8.00.

Most taprooms in town charge $6.00 to $7.00 per beer.

I said, "I ordered two", and the answer was that they were $4.00 each. For pints.

While the selection is very limited, the beer offered is very good.

We will be stopping there more in the future.

Bill

Cooper getting some love at Lemonstreet. They even bought her some treats.

I had a girlfriend who had a yappy little dog named Bob, who I renamed Bob Barker. Every time she asked me not to call him that he would immediately start yapping like crazy.

Today is my wife's birthday and tomorrow is my grandson's.

I'm taking my wife off for a ten-day vacation to the coast.

PS: Does one still have a "vacation" if you are retired and not working?

There may be a different word for it, but yes. It is still a vacation.

On a sad note, after stopping at the lake for some perspective I read this story :

Man kills himself on Reeds Lake dock

KENT COUNTY, MI – Police say a man shot and killed himself Tuesday, Oct. 5, near Waterfront Park in East Grand Rapids.

Police responded at 9:27 a.m. to a report of shots fired at the park, on Reeds Lake Boulevard. East Grand Rapids police found the man at the end of a long dock on Reeds Lake. He was deceased.

Initial findings indicate the death was a suicide, police said, adding that there is no danger to the public.

For some reason I was just gutted about this. He and I both went to the same place for very different reasons. I cannot imagine what circumstances drive a person to the brink, and I wonder if just one person had said just one thing a the right time if it would have drawn him back. I hope that his family can somehow find some peace.

I think I have a few people I really need to reach out to today.

Not sure if I should be happy about this or not.

My Credit Union sent me a notice a week or so ago stating that they are raising the credit limit on my credit card. The notice didn't state what the new limit was, and when I logged into my account, I didn't see anything showing what the limit was.

We received our statement in the mail yesterday, and when I looked at it, I was at first confused. Our limit used to be $1,000. I figured they'd bump it up to like $2,500 or so. Nope, they bumped it up to $16,000.

Like I said, I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it's great knowing that we've got plenty of credit available in case there is some sort of home repair we need to do, but on the other hand, I'd rather not get that much in debt.

I think the government's stance is still that you can spend your way out of debt.

Let us know how that works out for you.

So we are on our vacation trip and overnighting in the quaint, Edwardian architecture town of Prince Albert in the arid Little Karroo region of the Weatern Cape Province.

https://southafrica.co.za/prince-albert.html

They have not had rain here for nearly 12 months...
On our arrival, it clouded over and it has been raining ever since we went out to dinner !
Townspeople were out joyfully walking in the rain!

PS: Gentle rain on a tin roof is wonderful to calm the spirit and soothe the soul.

I had a University friend and a Mother in law from The Netherlands.
Neither was very good looking...

I've never considered myself to be particularly good looking. Rather plain, really. Here's a recent picture. Nothing special.

I have had people say I look like some other famous guy, I can never remember his name. Phil or Frank or something. I don't see it, though.

It's from eating herring for generations. Life has it's compensations....

BTW, are you sure that guy's Dutch? He should be leaning on a bicycle.

My dryer was making a new noise, and something was clearly out of balance.
Or worse....

Opened it up, took out the drum, and took the cover off the vent fan.
Full of sheets of lint.
It has been clear forever the lint filter is *MAYBE* 80% effective, and here was a result of it.
The blower fan had a bit of damage from being ran out of balance, but I think I shimmed it well enough to go for another few years.
Total cost: ~2 hours.

The temps have cooled down, and we've had only one day over 90 in the last two weeks!

Thanks to all who post here. I found it so uplifting to read the last couple of pages of posts from fun and silly to heart-felt and profound.

That beautiful Sunday morning trip by the river had one foible. I dumped the Stella alongside the road.

It's a 25mph one way (the other direction is bicycle traffic only). I was looking to my left at how beautiful the mist rising from the river was. I saw a great spot for a photo op over my shoulder and decided to turn around. While still looking I veered toward the right side of the road, and by the time I looked where I was going I was closer to the edge than I realized.

Normally I would have just driven through it, but the shoulders are wet and squishy. And full of branches.

I was going slowly enough that it was one of those slow motion "NOOOOOoooooo!" falls. I went over and felt my helmet go "Squish!" into the mud.

I stood up - the Stella was sideways happily put-put-putting away - made sure nobody saw, righted the bike and went back for the photo.

I wasn't even shaken, just humbled.

I walked around the bike just checking things out and didn't even notice the leg shield until I got home.

I thought about it, and I'm not at all worried about the appearance of the bike, so a couple (ok, three or four) smacks with a dead blow hammer and all is good again.

Before.

After.

I've been looking at the Prima BBQ rack for the Stella for a while now. I had a similar rack on the P200e and always liked it. Right now I have that stupid floppy folding rack with a topcase on it, but zip ties keep breaking and yaddah-yaddah-yaddah ... so I pulled the trigger yesterday. Hopefully it'll be in by the weekend.

They sold me on it with the description :
Quote:
If you are sick of puny fold down platforms and losing passengers when you wheelie over sweet ramps, this is the rack for you!
And, you know, for those reasons it really is the rack for me.

A supervisor at the plant I work at was looking at my scooter and asked me about my route to work every day. I asked him why and he said, "Everyday before 6am the same guy on a scooter passes me on the freeway." I said he shouldn't take it personally, I pass everyone.

A few months ago I went on voluntary reduced hours at work. So now, I have Fridays off, which has been really great. My wife and I often travel over the long weekends, and I'm able to get stuff done and still have time to relax between workweeks. (My commute tends to make it difficult to get much done during the week, so now I have Friday to do chores if I need to, and we can still do fun stuff.)

Anyway, with winter coming on, we'll be traveling less, and yard work and scooter maintenance is done for a few months. So what to do with Fridays now?

Well, I found a bicycle sort-of-coop organization in Madison and volunteered some of my time there. I was a bit concerned at first, mostly due to my experience doing free bicycle repair over the last couple of years. In that case, I just posted online I'd do free bike repair and people would come drop their bike off at my house. I found that people would often treat the free repair as without value, and have rather high expectations of me going out of my way to do this thing for them. So that turned me off of that.

I worked my first few hours yesterday, and, well, it cheered me up. I'll be back....
