Two things done...

I finished fitting the wicker basket I had hand made onto Sunny's rear rack.
It looks a bit more classy than the recycled supermarket hand basket I used before.

Secondly, I did a service on her today - filter and oil changed by myself under supervision of my Vespa guru. It's easier than you think, guys!

Take exhaust off.
Place 5 litre can with side cut out under the bike (with the RH main stand leg inside to stop it moving about)
Turn out drain plug and drain oil.
Unscrew oil filter and remove inner plastic mesh filter.
Clean mesh filter and dry off well.
Replace drain plug and mesh filter in position.
Fit new oil filter cartridge and turn hand tight.
Torque to spec.

Pour in 1200 cc oil.
Refit exhaust.
Start engine and run for just a few seconds.
Remove oil catch pan and clean main stand leg of oil.
Start and test run the scoot for a block or so.
Check oil level.
Check for any oil leaks and clean off.
Job done

Went on a road trip to Wisconsin for the Independence Day break from work. Left on 6/30, returned home on 7/10. While up there, I saw everyone in my immediate family (Dad, Step-mom, both brothers & SILs, niece, Mother, Mom (former step-mom), and my 98-year-old Grandma).

Drank a lot of beer, ate a lot of great burgers, and had an overall great time. I missed my wife and the cats, but not the Texas heat.

Apologies to Madison Sully & fledermaus for not looking y'all up while I was there.

I ended up getting an average MPG for the trip of 25.2. The best I got on a tank was 29.2. I'm happy with those figures.

Totally understandable, no worries there.
In fact, I would have had to decline a visit, being under quarantine and all (oh, and sick ).
Glad you enjoyed your trip nonetheless.

Sorry about the quarantine.

I spent most of my time on the East side of Madison, specifically the Eastmorland Community and Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara neighborhoods on the northeast side of Lake Monona. Both of my brothers, and our Dad & Step-Mom and our Mother all live within two miles of each other (within a 1-mile radius of Olbrich Park).

Medical issues are slowing me down, so I contacted three contractors to replace a 70' fence who all ignored me. They must be swamped and short-handed.
My gardener showed up this morning and removed the old fence in three hours and is setting posts now. Progress feels great.

As per the "pissing me off" thread, I had lightning punch a hole in my roof. I'm very happy to recognize the help folks are providing to get me back whole.

My roofer, who had the damage patched (temporarily) by noon today and will be back next week to repair permanently. This is the major item and estimate for full repair is a very reasonable $1250.

A rare "kudo" to Xfiniti comcast for a pain free modem replacement - first time I've spoken positively of them in my life, I think.

My garage door guy - can't be here until Friday, but coached me thru a "workaround" to my problem until he can arrive.

My HVAC crew for working an inspection into the schedule today for my 2 yr old equipment.

Great to have folks helping out. Grateful.

Took my new deckhand to work today and asked her if she minded scooter pooling on our 4 mile ride to the boat. She said that she'd never ridden on a scoot or motorcycle so I gave her some basic instruction and away we went. Afterwards, I asked her what she thought and she said it was fun and could we do it again. OK, I'm a shallow man with simple tastes and when a cute 22 yo asks this 75 year Old Squid for another ride, it makes me smile.

Bought a new tool. The slide hammer Robot said I would need to remove the baffle from my Akrapovic muffler. The baffle came out on the first pull.

Then the start and my mighty 150 has a new engine. And just rolled around the block on the first ride.

Big smile as this 71 year old kid played with his new toy! Sweet!

Clearly an old age triumph....

Pulled my mower out of the shed yesterday to get out the tiller for my garden. Didn't pull it out that far, forgot about it when backing out the tiller and tripped over the mower.

Next think I knew I was falling backwards over the mower. Somehow, it managed to be a soft landing-no bruises, no head impact. Did bend the rear axle a bit but got that straightened out just fine.

Woke up today expecting to be more sore, but nope, just the usual morning stuff that comes with being old.

Somehow 20+ years ago I never celebrated the lack of things going wrong like I do now!

Even though I was running late this morning, I took the time to stop at Taco Cabana for breakfast tacos (Chorizo & Bean w/ Cheese).

There were pools of orange oil in the foil wrappers after eating them, and some oil had leaked out and soaked through the bag.

They were perfect.

Just had my physical in late June. The doctor said my heart is healthy & in great shape. HDL Cholesterol was 43, LDL was 115, CHOL/HDL Ratio was 4.0, Total Cholesterol was 173, and Triglycerides was 76.

I know that if I eat that for breakfast every day, or every other day, I'm setting myself up for issues sooner or later. But once or twice a month should be fine.

Somewhere out there there is a starving HPE that could use that oil.

This morning I check my bicycle tire pressure before I go for my AM ride. Front tire, a tubeless, needed more topping off than usual. I sprayed it with soapy water and check with a light and did not see a leak. Left with normal 70 PSI and all was good. Later in the ride I rode around a cul de sac about 15MPH and the bike slipped out from under me and I was on my ass.

Stunned on the road I see nothing on the road I might have hit. I've been through that turn hundred's of times. Two folks who saw me fall offered to call 911. Thankfully I was bruised but OK

Guess what, my front tire was soft. Apparently tires don't grip well when very low in pressure. I have suffered a bloody elbow and bruised hip.

I added air and road about 2 miles to the normal coffee spot.

1. I've learned a lesson and it hurt.
2. I'm very glad I was not on my Vespa.
3. I was careless and got hurt.

Very thankful it was minor!

This morning was exceptional.

My son, 26, has Down Syndrome. It has been literally 26 years of work and school and court dates (protecting his money and interests from his mother) and two weeks ago he accepted his first job.

In Michigan, special education extends to age 26 and for the last year he has been in a job training program, oddly enough in the hospital where he was born.

Quick background, he and his twin sister were born 13 weeks early. Many months in the hospital, multiple surgeries and then everything that comes with DS nearly crushed me. Their mom and I were not together when they were born, and I know I didn't do a lot of things right, but I made a commitment to myself and my kids that I was going to be the best Dad I could be despite the circumstances, and from that perspective I have no regrets.

So, this morning I dropped him off at work. His first job. It's at the hospital where he trained working with people he knows. It's only a couple of days per week, but it's his.

Coupled with that, I've been driving this little electric car since January, and I like it more and more all the time. Don't get me wrong, I still love my old Volvo. In fact, I washed it yesterday, gassed it up (for the 2nd time this year) and we took the dog for a ride. But this morning at 6:00am in that silent car, having a few extra minutes, I drove down by the lake with the windows down and was just able to listen to the absence of bustling suburbia. It was 64 degrees and clear. I stopped at the lake, snapped a couple of pictures and listened to the geese for a few minutes.

It was just one of those mornings when everything clicked.

Awesome! Plenty of reason to have a good day!

I used to roll my eyes seeing my dad cry at things like my graduations. I'm following in his footsteps. And the more challenging the journey getting them to a milestone, the more tears.

I sold my two 1981 BMW R80 G/S bikes today.

I bought two examples to make up one very good one and to part out the other or to build a Frankenbeemer with modern front suspension of it. I bought up a lot of spares and parts for it over a few years for the project. When I retired, I though I would start the project, but found I had lost the passion for it. I tried to get an expert restorer friend in on the project for a partnership, but Covid cost him his job as an airline pilot and it didn't transpire. On Friday he posted looking for a G/S as a project for a friend. I put my two bikes on the table for him to choose from.

Today he and his friend flew up to view and we did the deal on TWO bikes, not just one.
I get the opportunity to clear out all the bits and pieces that are cluttering up my garage.
The other two guys each get a sought after project bike to restore.

Everybody happy!

The IT tech showed up yesterday to fix my issue. He got everything up and running again, with no issues. He even helped me find the form I need to submit to request Admin privileges on my system, so I can reduce the number of Help Desk requests I'd have to submit.

The Office Manager was at her desk on the other side of the room, and when he left, she commented that he was nicer to me than she's seen him be to anyone else in the building.

My boss approved the Admin Privileges request, so now it's up to IT to approve it and grant it on their end.

So shortly after I made the post above, I again lost web browsing ability. And an hour and a half later I lost network connections, so I had to use the MacBook to get anything done.

Mid-day, I remembered the tech saying something about malware, so I searched the system for "antivirus" and found that we use Sophos. I ran it, and it found two files that contained malware. It said they needed to be manually deleted. Since they were files that I had downloaded years ago at my previous job (like 5+ years ago), and since I hadn't even been using the software they went with before I left that job, I simply deleted the entire folder that the files were in.

And I waited.

I finally decided to try rebooting the computer about 20 minutes ago. Everything came back fully functional - network, internet, web browsers. So I emailed the tech, told him what I did, and "resolved" the ticket.

The IT folks I know LOVE it when they run into an intelligent individual who can resolve most of their own issues.
They HATE it when they run into someone who just keeps clicking on every link they see.

Yeah, I try to have a good relationship with IT (and all service techs), because they're more likely to go the extra mile to help me out, or talk me through a solution over the phone instead of making me wait for a physical visit.

I now know this issue was most likely caused by my own actions, but I was able to resolve it.

If anyone is curious, the files in question were for Windows XP themes. I hadn't used them since my old employer upgraded to Windows 7.

That's the old, "Did you turn it off and back on again?" fix.

Well, except for the part where I did a virus/malware scan and deleted the bad files, I agree.

I've tried rebooting it in the past, and it didn't help, because those files were still there.

It's been trouble-free since that fix, so yay!

Had Jury Duty yesterday.

Arrived at 8am and sat outside the courtroom with the other potential jurors.

At 8:30 am the bailiff for the courtroom next to ours came out and called roll for their jury pool.

At 9am our bailiff came out and called us all over. He went on to tell us that the trial that was happening last week was expected to end last Friday, and didn't, so we weren't needed. He then said, "You're released from service, have a nice day."

So I went home and hung out with the cats.

Now that's a great verdict!
