It was in the bike for about 2 years, and I assume pretty new stock from scooterpartsco when I bought it a couple of years before that. I always try to keep a spare on hand.

That is a 1954 (December production date) wishbone rigid frame. Harley-Davidson didn't move to a swingarm frame until 1958 with the Duo Glide models. The frame is modified. The neck has been raked 5/8" (45 degree rake). Numerous tabs were cut off the original frame to make it "cleaner". The frame has been molded so that most of the welds are not seen. Finally, the open triangular area behind the neck has been enclosed with steel plate and molded.

I had a senior moment there on your frame year, Caschnd1. I knew that 57 was the last year straight leg, heck I just looked at a buddy's original 56 Pan a few days ago! My mind wanders a bit sometime. Facepalm emoticon

so the belt was at least 4-5 years old then. 2 years sitting on your shelf aging the 2 years of heat cycles installed. it could have easily been 1-2 years old when scooter parts sent it.

a fresh 1-2 year old belt would not ha ve done that IMO at 6500 miles.

Hopefully you will get a few more miles out of the Malosi

The difference between enjoying a ride and being broke down on the side of the road... not ignoring the 'grauncy' feeling just because the scooter seems to ride just fine. Good call on your part, pulling the transmission cover.

I turned the corner today on my motorcycle teardown/inspection project and started the reassembly process. This is cheering me up today.

Motor, transmission mount plate, transmission, and generator are back in the frame. It might be ridable in the next week or so.

It uses a 530 o-ring chain. It's a fairly standard size for big displacement/heavy motorcycles.

Despite the downside of social media, it can be really helpful sometimes. I posted this photo of progress on my motorcycle rebuild to a vintage Harley-Davidson group. Within a couple minutes a guy sent the photo back and circled a part asking "Is that a hairline crack?". Sure enough! He said this part broke on him a number of years back and got sucked into the gears. Broke the transmission case and bent the main and secondary shafts. Big time expensive to repair, so now he always looks closely at that part. I've never paid much attention to it, but I will now! Social media may have saved me from a very bad day. That's cheering me up today!

The neighborhood dads have gotten into dirt bikes… We all make our way to any given garage, work together (tools, knowledge, beers), pull motors apart, and get bikes running.

My wife said I could buy a dirt bike if I want to.

These are all early 2000's Hondas and Yamahas… maybe I'll be team Suzuki just to mix things up?

That's awesome! After 36 years in the Phoenix area, I had a lot of friends from the antique/vintage motorcycle community. I moved to Reno a year ago and really miss having people stop other dad's! by to see what's going on in the garage.

Enjoy the garage time with the dads!

I've seen photos and read about the motorcycle (and Subaru) work you do in your garage. The dads in my hood would be so lucky to have you as a neighbor!

It's December 7th, and I was able to take my Triumph Rocket 3R on a 100 mile round-trip ride up to Deadwood for coffee on the cafe's outside deck, then up to Spearfish to deliver some paperwork to the bus company I drive for, then back home on 1-90 running with a tailwind on cruise-control set at 87 mph. Temps were from the low 50's to the low 60's.

This ain't Baja California, it's western South Dakota, so these kinds of days are sorta special this time of Year.

I keep the volume low/off on my computer at work, so while I just learned last week that they break, I just now learned that they make noise.

After a 23 day tear down, inspection, and reassembly process, I started my old chopper this morning. It was a little stubborn since the temperature was 19F (-8C). It took 6 kicks to light. The flywheels felt like they were stuck in molasses. 60W oil is pretty thick when it's this cold. The kicks where I'm hopping on the pedal are not actual attempts to start the motor. I'm just moving past the compression stroke on the #2 cylinder so I can get to the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder (optimal for kickstarting an old Harley). After it starts I closed the enricher and blip the throttle a couple times. You can see the motor expel unburned fuel and then it settles into a nice clean idle. It was a cold shakedown ride, but so worth it! This cheered me up today 😁

No sound during the portion of the video that I sped up. I didn't think you'd want to watch a 3+ minute long video.

I'm picking up a Tesla 3 today. Leasing it for 2 years to see what the EV thing its all about.
My nephew had one that he was very happy with. He traded it in on a Model Y a couple of months ago. He really likes Tesla's products (he placed a deposit on a Cybertruck as soon as they accepted them), but he's not militant about it. Over Thanksgiving he mentioned that he checked the status of his Cybertruck reservation, and said it will most likely be 2 years before his is produced.

My wife and I are open to getting an EV as a second vehicle for her to commute in. We still have range anxiety about them. Her MIL lives 285 miles from us. Most of the EVs we'd consider could do that trip on one full charge. But my family lives about 1,000 miles away. I prefer to drive when visiting them due to a variety of reasons, and a trip that long in an EV would be much longer, time-wise, than in an ICE vehicle, hence the reasoning behind having the EV be a second vehicle. I'm sure that in time, range, charge speeds, and infrastructure will improve, and my concerns will be a non-issue.
