Walking my pup yesterday and passed a pretty girl with a pony tail and shorts jogging in the state park. It was cold. I warned her about frozen spots ahead. She smiled at us.

And on the drive home an XK-E passed us!
I recognized it emmediately after living 5 yrs in Europe in the 60's.....honked 3 times at him!

I came home smiling.....

Ok, so I'm breaking format here. This cheers me a lot, but it is ALSO scooter related.

Shopping around online for scooters, mainly just watching prices, I came across a listing that seemed to be one of those "too good to be true" deals. It's a 2009 GTS250 for under $4k. With well under 1K miles.
Sounds enticing! Pretty valuable having a trustworthy history on a used machine. If it works for you, worth checking out. Keep us posted!

Approximately 8 more hours at work (including lunch break), then I'm off until January 8.

There may be a lot of drama at work, but they make up for it by paying very well (IMO), and giving us plenty of paid holidays throughout the year.

Also, both elevators at work are now fully functional.

Day late, but this. Hovering near 40 and clear past two days.

To work on Wednesday, errands yesterday. My investment guy was giving out pies for the Holidays but surprised me with a poinsettia in honor of my mom. Was worried if I could carry it on the scooter, I replied, "no problem, I have a topcase!"

I originally had a post all typed up for the grompapotamus thread, but it turns out a spectacular turn of events means I get to post it here instead. Cliff's notes at the bottom.

Back in June, the shoemaker Carmina had a fantastic sale happening. I was able to make a "sorta grail" purchase (consider it "grail of non-full-bespoke shoes" purchase) in the form of their crocodile boots, but instead of just the usual brown or black options (which are fantastic in their own right) I got them ordered in green without the additional made-to-order fees.

There was a disclaimer it could take 2-3 months to make them, which is completely reasonable and entirely acceptable to me. I even figured it might be a bit longer, and had no issue with it.

Towards the end of October, I shot them a quick email curious if they had an approximate ship date, not to pressure anyone but just to see if I'd have them in time for our trip to Venice this coming February (we go for Carnevale every year, and I've written about it a couple times on my blogaroo). They apologized that they hadn't shipped, but assured me they were done--the company was just waiting on the export permits (CITES permits required with numerous government "processing" fees to be paid, because that bureaucracy protects endangered animals somehow) and the government ministry was moving at a snail's pace (given they're in Spain, that part is definitely more than plausible lol). Hey no sweat, boots are done just waiting on the government to do its thing. Understandable, no big deal.

A couple weeks later, joy of joys I had a tracking number. What elation!

Sadly, that box went to New York City. Confusion set in. Turns out they send exotics to their NYC flagship store *FIRST* then they're sent out to recipients around the country. I suspect this is a clever way to avoid having to pay import duties, though I don't personally know for sure.

They were delivered on 6 December according to the tracking information I received.

As of the 21st, I did not have ANY further information, so I called the shop they were delivered to, in order to ask if I needed to grab a train up to Manhattan (not optimal, but not something I'd be opposed to) to grab them in person, or if there was an expected ship date (perhaps after the din of holiday shopping season calmed in early January).

Well the shop was confused. They swore up and down they didn't have any exotics delivered recently. I reminded the gentleman the delivery occurred two weeks prior on the 6th, and perhaps it was just glossed over (hey these things happen). He was adamant, absolutely no exotics have been received by the shop in at least 3 months.

Well that's odd.

Carmina back in Spain confirmed via email that the boots actually hadn't gotten to the US, and that I was provided erroneous shipping information (which in and of itself is.....strange, to say the least, since their system requires an employee to deliberately select a specific order number, check a box indicating shipped, and then enter the tracking information so it can send an email), and that they were *STILL* waiting on the export permit from the government, and that best case they'd ship mid-January. Yeesh. Well, okay whatever. I'm perturbed but at least they're still communicating.

Weirdly I got an email notification just a bit ago from FedEx that I should be expecting a package from Carmina on 45th Street in Manhattan.

I guess the boots were there after all.

At this point I've learned never to order exotics from Carmina, calfskin only (because that ships straight to your house and doesn't need 37 layers of government officials arbitrarily deciding if you're allowed to own it). What a debacle.

But (and yes I realize I'm still a tidge premature since they're not actually HERE yet) it looks like I'll have them for Venezia. Huzzah!

Cliff's notes: The Spaniards don't seem to know what they're doing, but at least my beautiful green croc boots are arriving soonish.

After a 23 day tear down, inspection, and reassembly process, I started my old chopper this morning. It was a little stubborn since the temperature was 19F (-8C). It took 6 kicks to light. The flywheels felt like they were stuck in molasses. 60W oil is pretty thick when it's this cold. The kicks where I'm hopping on the pedal are not actual attempts to start the motor. I'm just moving past the compression stroke on the #2 cylinder so I can get to the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder (optimal for kickstarting an old Harley). After it starts I closed the enricher and blip the throttle a couple times. You can see the motor expel unburned fuel and then it settles into a nice clean idle. It was a cold shakedown ride, but so worth it! This cheered me up today 😁

No sound during the portion of the video that I sped up. I didn't think you'd want to watch a 3+ minute long video.

Awesome. That motor stand you posted a week or so before this was perfect btw

There are so many funny bits packed into this seemingly simple question, though knowing znomit, it was probably carefully crafted to achieve maximum funniness capacity in as few words as possible.

The funniest bit -- left unstated -- is that the supposedly metrified commonwealth countries are still using "pints" (an ambiguous term in its own right) as a notional unit of beer. Or at least informally calling them pints, regardless of how they might actually be measured.
SteelBytes wrote:

So it's come to this.

The reality is that I'm not generally annoyed by such things. Amused is a much better approximation of my feelings on the matter, but even that doesn't quite capture it.

But it does amuse me that people in metrified countries in general seem to know so little about the complexity of measurements around the world, while this petty tyrant that grew up with imperial (and worse, US variants of imperial-sounding units) seems to know far more about metric and alternative units than most of you native metric clowns.

Also, I think you (and, to be fair, almost everyone else) probably missed the subtext in the celsius thread, and the fact that I greatly enjoyed pissing off so many people over an extended period of time.

And that's what's cheering me up today!

I haven't been able to wear my old leather jacket for a few years. I got too fat! Since I retired, I've been losing weight. Amazing how getting out from behind a desk is good for health.

I tried on my old jacket today and poof! It fits again. I bought this jacket near Champagne, IL back in May 2003. It's from when H-D jackets were made well and before they became rolling billboards. Gave it a good clean and coated it with Neatsfoot oil. Glad I hung onto it!

This is cheering me up today 😃

Well what always comes to mind when i think of pigs in Australia is this horror movie i saw as a kid (early highschool on vhs).

"The film revolves around the attacks of a gigantic wild boar terrorising the Australian outback, killing and devouring people" - wikipedia

Not sure if it's imperial but maybe imperious

Fledermaus,

You are one cold weather rider. Not this old fart. I heard on the radio today a weather forecast that we are going to have a mostly snowless Winter here in Frostbite Falls Minnesota.

What is cheering me up. This Christmas with the kids seemed special. No grandkids yet. We sat around the warmth from the fireplace and had a measure of adult beverages and laughed for hours. In my family tradition, we make a lot of fun of each other. It is as if, if you like someone you make fun of them. Creates a thick skin, but has not severed me well out of among the masses. People seem to be to sensitive - or I am insensitive.

That is the latest - Happy New Year to Everyone

After our 2005 Subaru Outback finally died and went for organ donation, we were left with only the 1984 Westfalia Vanagon as a daily driver. This is not an ideal occupation for such a venerable beast. Today we spotted a 2015 Fiat 500e with 65,000 miles on the clock going for a very reasonable price - and after a quick test drive bought it on the spot. It needs a bit of cosmetic TLC, but it's all working just fine.

Although the range is pretty limited (it was 84 miles when it was new) to about 78 miles now, that is more than adequate for the uses we anticipate.

So now we've properly joined the EV club.

After a 23 day tear down, inspection, and reassembly process, I started my old chopper this morning. It was a little stubborn since the temperature was 19F (-8C). It took 6 kicks to light.

Being an avid YouTube video watcher of old diesel locomotive cold starts, this HD cold start ranks highly 😎

You are one cold weather rider.......

..... In my family tradition, we make a lot of fun of each other.
Well, Bob, I've backed off on the "how low can you go?" challenge, but it's slightly more about short days than temperatures. My usual daily ride is to work and it's usually dark by the time I'm free, so it's not just cold, it's dark and damp as well. Add the fall deer rut and it's more adventure than I'm looking for. Has absolutely nothing to do with age...

As for family interaction, it's the fun stuff I grew up on my mom's side. I'd guess our British friends would call it "taking the piss." To me it signifies closeness and affection as well as fun. I learned fairly early that my dad didn't share that trait. As a young teen, my mom, sister and I were going at it and he got upset and stormed out of the room, leaving us staring at each other.

Anyway, what's making
mehappy today is the combination of weekend, holiday and work schedule leaves me with vacation until Wednesday!
