About 14k miles and I too have a cracked piston on my 2008 MP3 500.

My symptoms were:

Sudden onset of 'hard to start'
Return of 'cold natured'
Maybe some slight loss of power
Slightly increased oil blow-by

It wasn't obvious except for the difficulty in starting the scooter.

Luckily, the shop I took it too had 25% off on labor for the month on Jan and I just squeaked in.

They said I had 20% leak-down. I asked but they had not checked compression "because these scooters have a pressure release to make them easier to start".

Looking for feedback; is it a really good idea to replace not just the piston head but the whole 'upper kit' ? It is $85 vs $395

That is how A&S did my rebuild. The replaced the entire upper end. I had an extended warranty that covered it.

Link to photos of scooter in shop. Rear end disconnected and rotated 45 degrees. Top of cylinder off.

OMG! I could not have watched that happen to my baby when it blew its top. I just hope it all comes back together again. BTW they left mine idling like crap. Complain if that happens to you. I just thought it would go away, and it never did.

They tell me there is a software update again. They also noted that it isles just fine once it warmed up so it better idle well when they give it to me.

Seeing it like this makes me want to see it they will let me sit there and clean it. So dirty under the tupperware.

*I almost wonder if we should inquire about a class action law suite? This is now happening to all of us with the same model, and neither the 250 or 400's have this problem.

I don't know any lawyers that do such work. Anyone?

I got my MP3 500 back form the shop today. New piston head, cylinder, rings, coolant, valve adjustment and spark plugs.

There is a fairly new computer mapping. It is strongly recommended by Piaggio. It increases the idle RPM. I like the results.

Wow! I hadn't really noticed the lack of pep when I took the scooter in but it sure seems more peppy now. More consistent power curve and more pep at all RPM.

I swear it sounds a little different. Maybe it is just me. But I like it.

The tech didn't put the gas cap cover back on in the same place and now the cover does not pop up on it's own like it used to. Not a major thing but I am going to ask them to fix that.

They recommended I go back the the straight breather-to-airbox rather than my air-oil separator contraption. They put it back together for me the way I had it but mentioned it at least three times. I'm torn.

The Quality Control techs that ride the bike after a repair took turns on my scooter so they both got a chance to try out it out. Seems the do not see these very often any more.

A voice in the back of my minds says "Sell the 2008 500 now and get the 2016 500 with ABS and a warranty."

Hi guys

I'm sorry to bring up the topic.

My nexus 500 is beginning to have a dry metallic jingle sound, just like when the segments sound on a 2-stroke engine, especially between 1500 rpm idle and 2500 rpm. Going up that number of revolutions, it does not sound.

It doesn't consume oil for now, and the performance is the same.

For those of you whose piston or rings broke, apart from the oil consumption, did you have any kind of metallic noise or something similar?

Thank you!!

By the way, the noise makes it especially when the engine is hot, when cold it sounds great.
