I have just returned home from an incredible trip to Jakarta Indonesia. The removal of a mid-week flight to Jakarta meant that the crew operating the Monday flight would have a four day layover rather than the standard two days. Members of the Qantas Helping Hands Community volunteered to man the flight and use the four days to assist with various local charities.

My wife and my 16 year old daughter accompanied me and assisted with the team. My daughter organised for the collection of various donations from her school. My ex-wife kindly organised the donation of some medical supplies from the hospital where she works.

My daughter Kate and some of the donations we were taking with us...

Paying it forward like that is such a great all-round thing. Not only does it benefit the community, but it makes the 'giver' feel good too, that they have done their part in putting things right in the world. Great story!

Day 1 in Jakarta. We took 46 children and 28 staff from Yayasan Elsafan, a school for visually impaired children, to a water park for a day out. These kids are from poor families, as are the wonderful full time carers, so would not have the resources to do a trip like this without assistance.

It was amazing to experience these blind kids being brave and having fun on the water-slides. One blind kid was a little cautious about going on the more adventurous rides. While going up the steps, he commented 'these steps are different, and there are a lot more of them! The young girls who are full time carers for these kids do a wonderful job and are full of love and patience.
Not only are the kids blind, but some have severe developmental issues as well. All, however, enjoyed the water.

Day Two. We visited Kampung Sawah - Cilencing in North Jakarta. This is an area where people tend to move to from the outer areas of Java looking for work in the city. This small community is literally on the edge of a rubbish dump. People make a living sorting through the putrid rubbish looking for recyclable material. They get just a few cents a kilogram. The local priest has set up a school and community centre. The aim is to try to break the poverty cycle by giving the kids a basic education and some english language skills to assist them eventually finding employment. We spent the day doing work to improve the community centre/school by painting it for them. Also was a great opportunity to interact with the locals. It was incredible to note that although these people have literally nothing, not a single person asked us for anything as we were working and spending time there. Also it was incredible to see that he kids were friendly and happy.

A particularly moving story was one of the crew (a language speaker) was asking a young lady what she was doing. She replied that she was making something to eat - rice with chicken. She then proceeded to offer to share what little she had with the crew member.

Day Three. We visited the PKBM Catholic Orphanage at Cibubur. I had the opportunity to visit this orphanage about two years ago. The building that the orphanage had at that time was rather underwhelming. Not enough space, damp, smelly, run-down. With the wonderful assistance of various charity organisations, the kids at this orphanage have just moved into a brand new building.

When I saw the kids two years ago I was quite upset due to the poor conditions. This visit filled me with hope, as the kids, although they still have very little, at least have a clean, bright healthy environment.

This young fella was hanging on to my daughter like a limpet! There are about 80 kids and 40 babies, so they do not get that much tender physical attention.

It is quite sobering to see 12 year old kids looking after toddlers. One of the toddlers vomited on the floor while we were watching some of the other kids do a song and dance show for us. A young 12 year old girl got up, found a cloth to wipe up the mess, then went to get a mop to clean properly while another youngster made sure the toddler was OK. It was quite sad to see these kids miss out on much of the innocence and 'childhood' our youngsters are privileged to have.

Overall it was a wonderful experience for my wife, and especially my daughter. They were both great with the kids. My daughter thanked me for enabling her to experience what I am sure will be a life changing experience for her.

Thanks for looking and commenting on the thread. Much of the work with the organisation is due to the tireless work of Cabin Service Manager Brett South. Also wonderful work is done by the local Jakarta Qantas ground handling team and other local charities.

The trip helped place a lot in perspective for me. First, I have two healthy kids. Second, what I might spend on an accessory for my vespa would put several kids through school for a year. Next time I am feeling a little down, I should remind myself just how lucky I am.

Wow!

Clap emoticon

You are making a difference. And you are right about how lucky we are. It really makes you think about priorities.

And maybe those kids are missing out on a lot, but just their demonstration of care and concern towards others shows you how they are focused on what is important.

They are learning that no matter who you are or where you come from, whether you come from abundance or poverty, there is one thing you can do, and that is make a positive impact in someones life.

That is a good lesson for everyone.

Thank you for reminding me.

We forget that one of the most amazing things is the human spirit. It stays when everything else is yanked away...or never there in the first place. These experiences are powerful reminders. There is nothing to celebrate about poverty itself, but I am always moved by human dignity in undignified circumstances.

Good for your daughter to share your experience. I have a 10 year old that I'm waiting for the same opportunity for. It's a great advantage to understand the spectrum of life and how really fortunate most of us here are.

Thanks for the positive comments!

If you are interested in an overview of what work is being done by the organisation, see this link http://www.qhhc.org/index.php/what-we-do/indonesian-projects/our-partner-projects.html

I am NOT soliciting for any donations, I just wanted to share with my online friends what was quite a moving experience for myself, family and co-workers.

Cheers,

Chris

A big thumbs up for you. Yes it's very rewarding to see other cultures and help. I do little things along the way on my trips. They add up. Once saved a womans life but giving her $50. That's how much her surgery cost. Feels good to give back. I've had a good life and my parents taught me to give back when i was a kid. When you get out into some of the poorer countries around the world it amazes me that they can smile after knowing where they live and what they don't have. They don't see it as not having tho. Once had a woman kill one of her chickens for me so i could have a meal. While this doesn't seem like much a chicken is a big deal. She graciously let me stay in her house (her bed) after i tore my meniscus hiking the Himalayas. She wouldn't take any money either but i slipped her some when she wasn't looking. To this day i like giving better than receiving. Well most times. Laughing emoticon Keep up the good work. 8)

We have an expression/concept in Hebrew; 'tikkun olam'. It literally means "repairing the world" (or "healing the world"). It is meant to suggests humanity's shared responsibility to heal, repair and transform the world.
