If your bike hasn't had the ECU update and if there is no dealer with the diagnostic tool you are pretty screwed. Now the bike will run ok - it'll just have that nasty habit of dropping out occasionally when slowing. What happens is when the clutch releases the engine must maintain steady RPM's. The original ECU had a bad ramp that tried to adjust to the drop in RPM's too quickly resulting in a stumble. Just make sure all the other "tunable" items are in best shape. Good luck!

Don't breath any of the exhaust fumes then...

You can get proper throttle-body cleaner sprays that aren't so extremely poisonous when burnt.

Ummmm if you're mechanically inclined. You have to remove the airbox, then connecting tube to the throttle body. You can see inside the throttle body there is a butterfly valve that is actuated by the throttle. Bear in mind that your engine is exposed - do not let foreign objects get in. Anyway - inside teh throat there is a small hole on the side near the butterfly- that is the idle port. Best thing to do is spray a little and let soak, use a bristle brush that will NOT shed bristles and try to clean the port. Also bear in mind this isn't the easiest location to work in so make sure you have a flashlight and lots of patience.
BTW - I was reminded on my way home today that the RUN switch can cause this BS too. Mine started cutting out and jerking at 75 mph and I was trying to thin kof how the plugs looked last and how long. On a whim I cycled the run switch about a dozen times and she settled right down. I think it just has a nasty habit of collecting crud in there and can get intermittent contact. Now bear in mind this occurs at any speed - not just from slowing down as you describe. But worth a shot since it's easy to do.

you really should only use throttle body cleaner. anything else screws with seals and gaskets.

Fuoco ECU upgrade booked..
I've booked my Fuoco in for a check of the ECU and an upgrade if needed on the 20th of June...
Its stalling if I brake hard so it sounds as if it needs it. Will also look into the throttle body clean before then in case it cures it, but will probably go ahead anyway as it sounds as if the bike will run better anyway..

Thx

Let us not forget how we managed with the stalling prior to the update.
Just brake with both handles until near 10-15 mph, then release your
front/right brake and prepare to 'blip' the throttle when it begins to do
the 'chug' that tells you it's about to stall. I found that if I'm going between
2500-3000 rpms while coming to the stop, it wouldn't act like it wanted
to stall nearly as often as sudden stopping from higher running rpms.
This is NOT a fix, but it will make for a more controlled riding experience.
Happy riding. 8)

It's not the controlled stop that's the problem - it's the sudden need to brake hard in traffic - if you stall you may may become a hazard and get injured from an inattentive or unsuspecting driver.

I had the upgrade some time ago, but mine still stalls once in a while, usually when it has not warmed up good, I would not be surprised if this was the same with most of us, and we just hit the brake a little and restart it while rolling without thinking about it, probably just experience kicking in. You will get there too. BTW After 2 1/2 years and 16,000 miles I still think of myself as a fairly new rider and learning every time I get on it.

Where are you located? Piaggio thinks they have servicing dealers in a number of African countries (not a whole bunch, I'll grant you )

ECU upgrade..
Had the ECU upgrade yesterday.

I think that the bike seems to perform better and accelerate more smoothly now.

I wouldn't say that the idle is totally smooth now but seems to sit around 1500rpm with much less variation than before.

I'll take a look and give the throttle body a good clean when I try and change the belt in the next couple of weeks.

For reference the document which gives the detail are:

Technical Communication #007 - Year 2011 - 19/05/2011
Recalibration of the ECU with Release 1233GP40.

The instructions to the mechanic performing the upgrade tells them to
clean the throttle body prior to performing the ECU update. Confirm that the shop that did the update did that before you do it again. That is what my shop told me they did per the instructions. Also was supposed to have the air filter cleaned prior to updating too, mine was just cleaned so I told them to not bother doing more than a shake out if needed. 1500 rpm seems about right for idle speed, and it's never going to be 'smooth'. Just the nature of the beast when it comes to combustion engines. As long as you don't see large spikes in idle rpms, it's most likely running normal. But if you want to try something, replace or check the sparkplugs, fouling will mess with idle smoothness.

It seems to be getting better, I'm pretty happy with it now...perhaps its got to relearn things after the remap.....sits at 1500...

I sprayed throttle body cleaner down the inlet pipe a couple of times the week before the upgrade...I'll be doing a full clean when I change the belt in the next couple of weeks...don't think I need to pay somebody else to clean the throttle body...

All in all glad I did the upgrade..
