Just go turned down for a fix under warranty for too many miles at 16,000. Funny, my contract says unlimited miles. I am going to ask for a review. I have decided to fix it rather than the Gonzob special. I am going to have to at some point anyway. Could not sell it without telling them they may have to do expensive fix any time. Not that I plan on selling it any time soon.

Do the Gonzo tweak
I developed the notch for the first time at 9,000 miles. I had a hard time getting it fixed under warranty. It took three months before the shop could move forward, and even then they were still waiting on permission from Piaggio USA. They did the replacement as per the new installation guidelines, but at 19,000 miles the notch had returned. That long repair only lasted for one rear tire change.

I'm nearly to 30,000 miles on the scoot and still living with that same notch. It's substantially worse, and I've nearly dropped the bike a time or two at low speed when the handlebars stick and then pop free. The scooter is actually very irritating to ride around town, and I really prefer to have it on the freeway where you don't notice the notch. Considering that there's no way I'll get these bearing warrantied again I'm going to do the Gonzo mod as soon as I can dig my tools out.

If you're going to have the shop fix your scooter be prepared to part with at least $1,500, and don't expect the new bearings to last longer than the first set. That's my experience anyway.

------------------
Just as a side note, I really like my MP3. It's such a fun bike when there are no major problems, and I wish that I wanted to keep it longer. With this notch issue though I'll be selling my bike as soon as I've got the money for a more reliable, easier to fix motorcycle. At least one with a warranty that means something. Maybe I'll get a Goldwing.

I got my notch fixed at 35,000 miles right at the end of the extended warranty.
Go back and tell them you want it fixed.

Then order the tool and a torque wrench and check their work when you get it back. Because they will most likely over tighten it again just like the factory did.

It's just wrong how Piaggio tries to pretend the problems don't exist.
Seriously - I have zero respect for Piaggio as a company.

The first time it was fixed was near the end of my extended warranty. It's a 2009 model, so there's no way it's getting fixed on Piaggio's dime in 2013.

Also, the last time Piaggio replaced the bearings they fought to the bitter end to avoid the work by claiming the steering bearings are a normal wear item after 6,000 miles. If I had known Piaggio designed 6,000 mile steering bearings into this scooter I would have never purchased it in the first place. More than likely they picked this number to avoid warranty work on everyone's scooters when these bearings inevitably fail. Either way I'll never buy a Piaggio again.

I had to change my bearing after only 3 000 miles... YES, 3 000 miles.
The new ones I have installed, in 2010, have now more than 16 000 miles and still counting.

But the OP only has 16,000 miles and it's still under warranty.
