For the last few years I've been the stay at home Dad. Before that I had gone back to school for a nursing degree, which I have. And before that ran my own auto shop, mainly body work. I've been going a little nuts as of late dealing with kids all the time and no adult contact and said something to a friend about it at the gun range. A gentleman I know but not real well then offers me a job. It's maintance on large equipment in a factory 3rd shift, an odd, 3 on 4 off, 4 on 3 off schedaul. I'd be working over 3 other guys. It sounds like crappy works but he'll start me out at $70k with beni's, last guy he said was bringing in $90k after overtime for the year. I have a little time to think about it, the money sounds good.

For me it would depend on the age of the children and whether or not you need the money.
If they are under 13, my suggestion would to be to try and stay at home with them till then. ...You only get to raise them once. I (or my wife) was lucky enough to be able to stay at home with my daughter till she was 12 and we never had to pay for someone else to raise her. Not too many get the opportunity to do what you're doing now. Of course, if you need the money then take the offer. Your children will understand and likely appreciate the benefits of the additional income. Joshua *EDIT - I stated prior "dual income home" but that's somewhat narrow of me to assume. ⚠️ Last edited by Syntagma on UTC; edited 1 time

If you have your nursing degree, why don't you just work per diem at some hospital. Basically pick and choose your hours. I'm sure the nursing money back there is good.

Nursing only pays around $45k a year, most places less starting out. And you end up 3rd shift anyways. And hosipatals don't close for christmass. But I wouldn't get dirty at work. Like everyone else, we need and we don't need the money. My wife works and we manage to cover the bills and then some. But there's nothing set aside for retirement. The income would be nice. We have 9 kids from 6months to 15 years. Added income would be really nice. May even afford us the life style I would enjoy. But working nights I may not be awake during the day to enjoy it.

As someone whos had a hard time being employed the last few years, I think I would jump at a job that pays that well, even if the hours or the job were crappy.
I dont have kids, and I'm not remotely in the same position you are, but I have to wonder about planning to do something like that [over nights or hard hours, but for good pay] for a planned short term [6 mo to a year] and paying off debt and putting the rest in savings, or fixing up the house. |

$45,000??? Thats it?? Holy Cow!!! I guess I'm spoiled by wages in NorCal. The one thing that might make nursing the better option is you will always have a job. Industry seems to be a little more dicey for the long run. Maybe better benefits at a county hospital as well.

I may a little on the low side saying $45k for nursing. Nursing jobs I looked at were paying between $19 and $24 an hour. I think $20 an hour is $45k. It is the mid west. I should say it's an LPN not an RN I have.

I would accept the job. If possible, keep looking at the nursing sector to see if anything comes up for your preferred work hours.

9 kids?? you should start your own baseball team; it's already a given that they'll beat the NY Mets! As a medical professional myself; i can say that your degree will always be in demand.
