That is so unusual for a wolf. I'd worry about rabies or something when an animal's behavior is way beyond the norm.

Somewhere in the Yukon many years ago I was driving to Anchorage watching the aurora borealis in my jeep cherokee when an enormous silver wolf walked up on to the road. It was a dirt section so I was going slow and stopped in plenty of time. The wolf stopped in the road and looked at me then casually continued on. One of my fondest memories of my time up there.

When my grandpa was a boy his dad was a prospector. One of his chores was to take his dad lunch. One day when he was walking back to their cabin in the woods he started to cross a meadow when he saw a huge grizzly bear. He spun on his heels and ran for his life. When he got close enough to where the men could hear him he started yelling "bear" over and over. The men grabbed their guns and asked g'pa where was the bear. He told them it had chased him almost all the way back and was so close he could feel its hot breath on the back of his neck. The men started back along the trail looking for tracks. When they got to the meadow they found his tracks where he spun and ran and the bears tracks turning and going the opposite direction.
G'pa has been gone since 1973; but I like to think he would appreciate a story about his childhood over a hundred years ago still being told. A couple years ago my brother and I shared driving duties taking our parents on a bucket list vacation. When we were headed towards the entrance to Yellowstone park the roads were clear; but there were snowbanks approximately six feet high bordering the road. Unbeknownst to us the park that had been open when we left on the trip had closed because of late storms and the roads were deserted. I was driving and as we came around a bend there was a grizzly in the road walking away from us. It tried to leave the road; but couldn't get up the snowbank. My brother pulled out his camera and rolled down his window and started taking pictures, telling me to follow. I was more than a little leery as I was afraid the bear could run faster than I could reverse on the narrow winding road. Finally the bear got to a point where the snowbank could be climbed and went on his way. I know without pictures it didn't happen so here's a couple I was able to find. Even though we weren't able to enter the park we had a great trip including visiting relatives, going to a zoo, watching the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, and seeing the Grand Canyon among other things. ![]() On the road walking away

I had to deal with a Canadian Goose and some goslings a couple of weeks ago. They just suantered across a 4 lane road without a care in the world, but the mama goose did get a bit agitated when I seemed too close for her comfort.

We saw a wolf once.
We were out south of Ouray, CO [kind of SW Colo. Mt. area] looking at ghost towns [old mining shacks and what not] walking down a dirt road that was frequented by jeeps going on back country tours. A wolf walked out into the meadow clearing, maybe 25 yards away, didn't even seem to notice us as he headed for the river. It was a surprisingly close encounter. We saw a bobcat run across the road in front of us , in Northern NM a couple weeks ago. A lot of the Mt. towns had bear problems last summer due to drought. We were in Aspen for a wedding and the big story was, that the family had come into town and stopped at the ranger station. A couple people went in and someone stayed in the car with the baby and the dogs- had the windows down. A young black bear walked up to the car and stuck his head in the window. The dogs went ballistic and scared it off. But everyone was pretty shaken up. |

I encountered one...
I was hitchhiking on Hwy 1, between Anchorage and Eagle River, and had a severely mangy one following me along the tree line just down the embankment. After following me for a 1/2 mile or so it started heading towards me. At that point, I frantically flagged down a car and requested they drive me up the road aways. (Heh there's another story about who picked me up.. but another time)
BUT I tell you... that wolf wasn't a pretty, it wasn't sweet looking, and like nothing you'd see in a NatGeo mag unless it was about mange. It was damn ugly and I looked like an easy meal. |

Gotta say - that wolf pic is damn cool.
I love wolves (got a tattoo to prove it). Closest I've come is seeing a small pack in the mountains of wyoming stalking an elk in the snow. I was driving on the highway and had a great view of it. Pretty amazing. Seen black bear in Virginia and PA. Those were right on the edge of a twisty two-lane mountain road ... scared the crap outta me. |

When I still lived with the folks in the Boonies, I was coming home in the early hours (3am) and saw a dog sitting on the side of the road. It looked like German Sheppard and seemed lost. I pulled over and turned off the car and called to it. I thought I could take it home and call around and see who lost a dog the next day. It was very nervous. I never actually got out of the car, but had the window down. We were sitting on an overpass. Finally, my tired eyes realized the the dog in the headlights was a bit different. I turned on the car and he darted away.
The next day, as I was driving off the exit and onto the highway, there was a red lump of "hamburger" and a beautiful tail. It was my scared, young coyote from the night before. My a-hole boyfriend at the time said it must have been my spirit animal, and now it was dead, and somehow that was funny. |

I hate MV!
Every time I think I have a scoop... I get beat out by 50 other people
I was sure I'd be the first one to post this, since I read the National Post on my iPhone at 6:30 a.m. when I saw this story. My mistake was not rushing to post on MV. No... I waited until I was showered and dressed... and it's 10:00 a.m., and stupidly, I still think I've got a scoop. But... like any good MVer, I search first... and well, here I am, Johnny come lately, no lightning, not even any thunder. Rats! ![]() |

This thread scares me. Well, it makes a road I frequently travel scare me more. What's more folks recently said a huge (6' or more) bear was seen alongside this very road.

Cool scene (from the distance of the internet).
A couple years ago we watched a wolf follow a deer through a park just a few miles from our house. Neither seemed in a hurry and we imagined that they must know each other as they were both adults in a relatively small eco-system. It must be a daily dance for them. My story is a bit close but it's different because we injected ourselves into their world. Last summer, almost exactly one year ago, my wife and I went to Alaska and went on a bear seeing fly in. While sitting and eating lunch while watching a pack of grisleys a couple started walking buy us. I was on the end (since you walk in a row and I was the tallest) so I was sitting on the end of the line. First, a big mail came by, ignored me, but came within about 20 FEET OF ME as he headed toward a stream. His woman followed, but for some reason she was curious about us, and since I was closest she turned and started coming toward ME! Per the briefing we had I sat still but she got within 8 - 10 feet of me before the guide jumped in the way and shooed her away! I was freaked but calm about it. After we flew back I asked the guide how often she has to do that. She said she's never had to do it before! THAT'S when I freaked! ![]() This girl was looking at ME!
By the time she was 20 = 30 feet away I stopped shooting pictures kind of thinking I'd better prepare to do something else... I didn't know what but I knew it wouldn't be snapping stills of my own death.
