Enclosed is a summary of the measurements taken to measure the volume contained within the Vespa GTS's pet carrier. I'll be taking the measurements from a 2007 Vespa GTS 250ie.

Pet carrier, couple measurand buckets, hose and pad to document the fluid added.

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
each (of the three) bucket was filled to 2 liters

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
first pass, added 6 liters total

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
added 12 liters

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
needed to lift the front end as to maximize the carry capability

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
18.8 liter to overflow

18.8 liter =
4.97 US gallons=
18,800 cubic cm =
.66 cubic foot =
1,147 cubic inch

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

For comparison a standard carry-on luggage is roughly 2,500 cubic inch. So the pet carrier has a volume capacity of roughly 1/2 a carry-on piece of luggage.

Enjoy!

Sometimes I wish they would have taken part of the 18.8 cu liters and given us a bigger fuel tank.

Since it can't fit a full-face helmet, I agree 100%.

The pet warmer is big enough for the few things we carry in it. We try to keep it nice and neat. Gloves, bungees, conspicuous vest.

I've included a pic of what we keep in the pet warmer. And also a picture of what I call sharpchick's Two Ton Purse.

And burns twice as long.

Archimedes would have pushed the pet warmer down into a half-full bathtub all the way to the rim (without letting water flood into it), and then measured the rise in the water level in the tub.

And....?
Even still Ive never had the need to carry 1/2 my luggage on my scooter (or anywhere else for that matter) so Im wondering what my take-away is here.

I've never done the math, but I AM able to adjust what I fit into my pet-carrier (beer warmer?) to 100% of it's capacity through selective reasoning

The Yamaha C3 is claimed to have 9 gallons of under-seat storage. I calculated the Vespa GTS at just shy of 5 gallons.

Ha! My first thought (well, except for the Acchimedes part )

The internal volume of the new Honda NC700X = 21 liters, 11% larger volume than the Vespa GTS and clains to hold a full face helmet.

Then Archimedes would have been doing it the hard way. The easiest way to measure the volume of something that holds water is to put a measured quantity of water into it.

He would have also come up with a slightly incorrect answer, as he would be measuring the outside volume of the bucket, not the inside volume. Yes, it's a small difference. But I'd like to think that Archimedes would have appreciated the distinction, since he was known to favor full-face helmets.

I agree with that one! At least one more gallon would have been nice.

Does anyone know why they give us measurements for this luggage in Liters? I never put just liquid in any of my luggage. Makes a huge mess!!

Ahh. Yes. We US North Americans never quite got comfortable with the metric system. And I am a geophysicist and engineer, whom converts all day long.

The GTS/GTV pet warmer volume of 42 L is about 1.5 cubic feet, the maximum volume of an airline carry-on luggage piece. The volume 42 L can also be called 42,000 cubic centimeters, or 0.042 cubic meters. I admit, I prefer cubic feet.

Seems in the USA, the only groups fluently using the metric system are drug dealers.
