Really missing my car's built in satnav. I am somewhat startled by the premium price of the motorcycle specific offerings from Tomtom and the like.

Is anyone here using a standard car satnav in a case or a smartphone?

I am tempted to pop my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in a waterproof mount like the below.

I use my Galaxy Note 2 and Google navigation. Works a treat!

Good to hear. What mount do you use?

Do you download the maps before a trip to avoid data signal problems?

I use an ordinary Garmin GPS unit in a case exactly like the eBay one. Those cases aren't completely waterproof in a downpour and it's often hard to see the GPS in sunlight, but it works well enough. I've had GPS units stolen -- I wouldn't feel as bad about losing a $100 unit as a $600 system.

Another thought.... I use the Givi S850 bag, for an iPhone 5, run the cable to the under seat charger if I need power. I intend to get a set of speakers to put inside the helmet and attach to the phone (or use a bluetooth setup) to hear directions.

Touch screen is operable when inside the bag, it's waterproof and has a spare compartment.

kyber,

I haven't added a SATNAV to my MP3, but I did add one to my Aprilia Mana (Garmin 3590)...here's what it looks like.

I use a Garmin eTrex designed for outdoor activities (e.g. biking, hiking). You have to load your own road maps on it and I don't think there's any voice directions. They are waterproofed. They are not touch, which to me is a bonus since it works equally as well with and without gloves.

I also have a Galaxy Note 2, I would like to use on my 500.

Does this mount above you have, come with the 1" ball in the back?

So that the RAM system can be used?

thx

FM,

If you are asking about my set up, I used what came with the Garmin unit, so everything you see came directly out of the box.

Nuvi 550 is a good waterproof option. Ram mount and wiring available. No Bluetooth though.

ashbrook - I think I was referring to the one with the so called waterproof case.

But I could use a non-case clip on to Note2 that has the ball on the back. thx

Ashbrook - if you have the Note 2, then the clip on won't work ... at least if you were to try and take a picture with that clipped on your phone, the hole is in the wrong place.

I use this piece of kit with my HTC One running Tomtom
As previously stated its hard to see in sunlight but otherwise seems quite stable.

I printed a holder for my bike.

not quite done with the design, I want it to hold the phone at a different angle, I want the style to match the angles of the rest of the bike, and I'll need to coat the new one with black liquid electrical tape. the plastic I print with doesn't hold up too well to UV, and the grip and color of the liquid tape will work out pretty well

A cousin has been talking about getting a 3-D printer and I was thinking about getting him to print me something like that with a ram ball or two.

How well does it hold? That looks to me like the phone would go flying out if you hit a big bump...
