Annual fires to clear forest land has been going on in Indonesia for a long long time. My husband was stuck for extra days when he was there 15 years go because the monsoons were late and the fires burned down into the peat. Ex-pats were evacuated by their companies because of the heavy metal being released by the burning peat. From what I've been hearing this year is another bad year for the fires there. Hopefully the rains will come and put them out.
