I spent yesterday at the FAST Museum in Farnborough, and very nice it was too. Here's their reconstruction of Sam Cody's 1908 British Army Aeroplane No. 1, in which he made the UK's first powered flight (Photoshop dickery by me):

So does that make you a full fledged Mod or are there more levels to achieve for Mod nirvana?

mod 2 is still required, to achieve fully-fledged Modness.

Thanks for the congrats guys!

Edit: I'm riding a Yamaha XJ6 for my tests. Nice bike!

Hopefully without any more headaches than dealing with DMV usually entails. Only bugbear is they've just closed down the local DMV for four months for renovations, so the next nearest one will be twice as busy as normal. <sigh>

Hmm that's a pain, but you're right CA is much more important than here Laughing emoticon

Dave,I failed my mod 1 first time, putting a foot down during the U-turn. Damned silly rules, but it has made my slow-speed riding ten times better. I used to always be a bit tentative turning doing slow-speed stuff on the behemoth of a BMW superscoot (250kg), now I don't really give a shit, unless the bike is tall, the road is on a slope, and there is an adverse camber (yes, I know that, for the first time in my life, I have used an Oxford comma). I nearly lost a Kawasaki Versys 1000 doing a u-turn because of a camber and being unable to plant foot firmly on terra-firma.

Many US DMV's can be a headache for sure. Good thing they make up for it with cheery personalities.

The Ardennes is very beautiful. Someone described it as an inverted mountain range with deep, forested valleys. Very unexplored and traffic free. Was there for a day or two last summer.

I don't think it will be quite as good at the weekend but still reasonable. I'm off this week, so had a nice 100 miles of country roads to ride round on this morning, then came back and fixed the cooker. Now doing Sundays roast dinner.

Another interesting difference between US and EU English. Use of the comma before "and" and "but" was pretty much forbidden. I am 50 years old - does that count as really old? Razz emoticon

so this morning i packed up my camera kit, got on the bicycle, and set off for wick woods to take some pictures. i'd shot one sheet of film when one of the beautiful brass adjustment knobs on my field camera jammed tight shut. I couldn't shift it no matter how hard I tried - and I almost ripped the skin off my fingers trying. knurled brass knobs can really do a number on bare skin (yes, i know, I said 'knob' fnar fnar, etc.). I couldn't even take the camera off the tripod and go home to sort out the problem, so i had to make my way out onto the canal path and find a crusty in a narrow boat who was willing to lend me a pair of pliers. luckily there was one right there, having his breakfast, and he was happy to help. i sorted out the naughty knob (fnar fnar again) and got back to work.

i shot ten sheets of film and discovered an awesome wigwam thing made out of twigs left over from coppicing. and a small set of pliers has now been added to the portable camera kit
