morning fellow mp3'ers.

used to be on here under a different user name but cannot remember the details, email etc so got a new name now!

anyway as the title says I believe I have got to be the plonker of the week. yesterday thought to myself, must top up the oil on the fuoco. so, after a hard day of soaking up the sun in the garden and generally chilling out, thoughts turned to the scooter.

checked the level and this showed to be just on the min mark. so got my trusted large syringe out, opened the bottle, sucked up 60 mls and proceeded to put into the case. check levels, more needed.

go to get more and realised I had filled the syringe with car wash shampoo Wha? emoticon

anyway, now drained and refilled with "proper" oil. question is: does anyone think I might have damaged anything? the fact that I didn't change the oil filter (didn't have one) is this a problem?

using the scoot daily (about 50mile round trip) and seemed ok this morning.

any thoughts.

thanks
Rob

as long as you didn't run the scoot you should be ok. I would probably do another oil change and filter after 20 miles just to be sure.

I would test the oil, and keep replacing it, until there was no further sign of the shampoo present... which I presume that you can see or smell from an oil sample.

Shampoo is a Surfactant, which breaks down surface tension... So then, the oil in your engine (combined with shampoo) will not stick as well to parts... probably not a good thing, buy hey it's anybody's guess as to how much would cause harm.

I was thinking more along the lines of "I'm forever blowing bubbles"...

Seriously though, don't beat yourself up about it - It's the sort of simple mistake that we are all capable of, some of us multiple times within the hour

That's one of the reasons why I tend to leave stuff like that to the nice people at the garage. Counter to the DIY ethos of many on here, I know, but it leaves me to worry about such things as not removing the wrong kidney. (Not that I've ever done that, thank every deity I can think of.)

Thanks for your responses. Scoot not run with the shampoo in. Put 60ml in and left it for half an hour before realising, drained straight out and refilled with oil. Just done a 30 mile run and all seems ok

Hopefully, no long lasting damage (60mls so only a small amount!) shall get new oil filter and do another oil change at weekend.

At least if there is any problems and the engine has to be opened up at least it will be clean Laughing emoticon
