I am about buying a vintage Vespa (1963) with out of state title. I would like to register it in Florida.
How can I register it? Do I need to get it inspected?
Thanks!

First step, run the VIN through the FHP website. If it comes up, forget it. If nothing shows up, you are good to go. If you have not yet purchased, it would be wise to post a pic here first or at least read the buyers thread on top of forum.

You can get a antique motorcycle plate if its old enough. Have the title, receipt of purchase, proof of insurance and that you have motorcycle endorsement on your FL drivers license if the scooter is over 50cc.
http://www.flhsmv.gov/DHSMVfees.htm You'll then get a FL title once it's registered in the State. |

I don't believe so... However - to be safe I'd be very nice to the person behind the counter at the DMV - and don't drive the scooter there... If they ask - tell them you're going to get your motorcycle license endorsement - and will only drive the scooter AFTER you pass and get your endorsement...
Good luck and have fun!!! |

miamiscooter - MAKE SURE THE TITLE IS ENDORSED/SIGNED OVER TO YOU BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER!!!
It might be on the bottom or back of the title. |

You won't need a cycle endorsement to get it registered, but you might get some issues at the DMV. They will need too check the VIN#, and to do that either you have to drive it there, or haul it. You might just coast under the radar, but remember that it is technically illegal to drive it without a motorcycle endorsement, and the ticket is about the same as the class.
You might (I can't recall correctly) be able to mail in the registration with a Notary Public to check the VIN. (its a for sure thing with in State as I did it recently), but What I can't remember if you can do this for out of state titles. It's not illegal to own a scooter without an endorsement, but it is to ride it, and they shouldn't care if you bought it for you or your kid, or someone else. |
