If you've followed any of my random progress threads with the '59 VBA, you'll know that I've been reporting fuel related engine dying.
(No not the clutch thing that's fixed)

After cleaning the fuel tank 3 times, rebuilding the Petcock one time and recleaning it again between carb disassemblies and tank cleanings, after I shot carburetor cleaner in my face and eyes, I finally saw the light. Actually I heard it.

I had the bike up on the lift with the engine at eye/ear level. While I was using my hand to kick the kicker, I was hearing this ticktickticktick, sound as the crank spinned. Hmmm that sounds like a spark. At first unthought something was happening at the coil, but upon closer listening, I saw that the spark if wire was arcing against the metal engine shroud. Voila! A short!

So all along, when it died it was feeling like it was running out of fuel because the short wasn't making a good enough ground to completely kill the motor instantly. It was just enough to mess it up until it died.

The sucker is running like a champ now.

I need to order a cover for the spark plug wire.

Been there! I have the cleanest SS180 carb in the world. Turned out to be a bad new condensor. (" I know I changed the points and condensor...it can't be electrical") That's the kind of shit that makes you crazy!

Nice job tracking it down

Sweet glad you found it. You probably needed to clean that fuel tank at least twice anyway. I'm thinking you liked spending all that time on it anyway. Admit it you like touching scooters

looks like you are missing the bolt that holds the cylinder shroud in place (to the right of the plug in your picture)

Without this bolt the shroud can pivot forward and contact the top of the plug.

If I hadn't had it up on the lift, at head level, "kicking" it with my hand, I probably never would have heard it.
