It's got action, it's a love story, very impressive sets ,it's stunningly creative and also really funny in places.
Plus it's the age old story of good against evil which everyone loves.
Plus it's a sci fi action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. And that's rare in sci fi.

(One could argue that it's actually an action comedy dressed up to look like sci fi, and maybe that explains why it doesn't take itself too seriously).

EDIT: Plus... Gary Oldman!

There's a problem here. There are movies that are great, but difficult and one viewing is enough ("Raging Bull", "Saving Private Ryan", "Full Metal Jacket", "The Godfather II", "Schindler's List", "Pulp Fiction", etc.)

Then there are movies I enjoy so much, I will watch them (even parts of them) over and over when they're available, I guess Desert Island flicks:

These movies are:

Galaxy Quest (The best Star Trek movie ever, simply perfect)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie one, not the the Black & White oldie)
The Fifth Element
This is Spinal Tap
Life of Brian

In no particular order, but very difficult to narrow down. Fun to wonder over and I'm sure I'll think of others that should be on the list.

Princess Bride
Grace of My Heart
Bugsy Malone
Fifth Element
Fried Green Tomatoes/Steel Magnolias/Love Actually (tied-cause you need a good chickflick/tearjerker)

Wow. It's no surprise to see truly exceptional movies come up often but there are some diamonds in the rough here that blind-sided me and many of you (strangers to a man/woman) have earned my respect if not my life-long friendship.

Joe vs. the Volcano. The oppressive basement bunker office with the flickering, buzzing, sickly green overhead fluorescents and that annoyingly repetitive conversation by Joe's boss. And the Steamer Trunk Salesman?... classic. If you like Meg, check out Addicted to Love. Schmutzie ending but a great little movie.

Pierce in the Thomas Crown Affair. When he piloted the GT-500 up that island road to his mountain top retreat I died a little inside knowing I'll never own such a place to "..never bring anyone here." And by the way, Denis Leary is one hell of an actor.

Fifth Element. "Where did he learn to negotiate like that?" Plus, a Gary Oldman villain. NOBODY comes unglued as well as Gary.

The Russians Are Coming? Dood... I just about shit myself. In a million years I wouldn't have guessed this movie to make ANY list. Well played. If you like obscurity search out "Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe".

Since many of my favorites have been listed already I'll mention a few as yet unmentioned since there is a lot of slippage in such a discussion.

In no real order...

Heaven Help Us
I went to Catholic school and this HILARIOUS comedy bookends the experience well. The good times, the bad times, the self-discovery, the friendships. Some moments you never want to end, others you can't forget fast enough.

Risky Business
The gravitational pull this movie has on me... it is without question the one I struggle most with to explain. It has this surreal, 4th dimension feel - I get completely lost in it. A large part of that has to do with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack and how well it mates to the visual impact. The Love On a Real Train scene is a time portal. The only other movie that matches the almost crippling emptiness as the credits begin to roll and the room around me comes back into focus is Blade Runner.

Gold Finger
The Gold Standard by which I measure all other Bond movies and possibly excluding Caddyshack, the Fletch series and Slap Shot the movie I can quote most fluently. I'll stop everything to watch it, again and again.

The Pink Panther
Peter Sellers was a God. His supreme characterization of Inspector Clouseau can only be rivaled by Sean Connery as Bond. I'm a big Steve Martin fan but he should've respected the completeness of Peter's legacy and left it alone.

WALL-E
This movie. This movie snuck up behind me in a dark room and ripped me up and tore me down. I was between relationships and actually quite happy about it until that little compactor found a love as big as the Universe itself. And the social commentary punches WAY above its kiddie flick wrapper.

All you youngsters sadly missed out on some of the REAL classics:

For Whom the Bell Tolls - Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman

Shane - Alan Ladd (my most watched movie)

On the Waterfront - Marlon Brando, Rod Steiger

From Here to Eternity - Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Borgnine, Montgomery Clift

Rebel without a Cause - James Dean (A shame he had to die so young)

OK, those are my all time old favorites, but since others have broken Jess' rules, allow me to mention my somewhat newer favorites which for some reason I haven't seen mentioned so far in this thread:

Assasination Tango - Robert Duval

Once upon a time in America - Robert Di Nero

The Rock - Sean Connery,

Ransom - Mel Gibson

A Quantum of Solace - Daniel Craig

This is a great thread, which has given me a good list of movies to watch!

Cheers,

Bob

Syd, good call. I just saw a movie called "Bronson" starring Tom Hardy. It's not for everybody, for sure. I was mostly struck by the fact that this young actor is extremely talented. It also has a cool soundtrack. I'll leave you with a clip.
You people from the UK should be well aware of this movie and main character. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Salvador
