Because gasoline will attack the plastic rear lens and make it crack and crumble. Mine had that mishap when new. I watched in disbelief as the lens started to disintegrate. It may be the ethanol in our fuel. Unfortunately, the entire lamp assembly has to be purchased because the lens isn't available separately. At least one other (Judy) had the same problem with her LX.

Ah ok, mine looked more like the screws had been over tightened at some point, also looked like glue in the cracks. Pleased with the new one though. £42 posted from eBay.

I believe that tight screws do play a part, in that the plastic is under duress at that point, so the spilled fuel will have a greater effect there, especially if there is already a crack.

Do all you can to avoid sloshing fuel down the ass end of your scooter.

Is this damage from gas for all the Vespas or just that model?

Interesting! I've spilled gas over my tank a few times, and have noticed some minor cracking around my rear lights. Now I know why!
