Modern Vespa

Nice site. Ive been searching the site for awhile so I thought I'd join and introduce myself. I recently purchased a new to me 2006 Piaggio BV250, barn fresh, with only 750 miles. it is graphite black with a color matched hard side luggage set and a givi trunk. I sold my 1986 Honda elite 250 that I ran for the last 5yrs. Years ago I ran a 450 Kawi nighthawk.

I have replaced the oil, gear lube, brake fluid, spark plug and cleaned and oiled the air filter and checked the antifreeze.

It had pretty bad backfire on deceleration when I got it and have run SeaFoam, cleaned the carb main valve/diaphragm and adjusted the idle higher. It helped some but still not quite right.

I extended the windshield about 4 inches with a lexan piece to reduce wind noise. I'd like to get a proper windscreen but can't find a replacement through Givi. I read the previous posts on the Givis but can't find a US vendor for the ones recommended here.

Overall it's a solid bike, love the big wheels and high speed manners. She runs about 72-75mph running solo with 6',200 lb rider.

Downside seems to be that parts and mechanics are tough to find in Central Illinois.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm glad there are some other BV's and other similar engine/powertrain Vespa's out there.
My tires look clean, no checking on sides.

I forgot my old nighthawk was a Honda. Also back in the 80's I had a 150 Elite too. Gotta love those old elites, damn near bullet proof.

I like the big wheels on the BV, they eat up the crappy pothole roads we have here.

Ou, you've got the side cases. If you ever want to sell them let me know.

Re the backfire, check the exhaust and make sure that you have a tight connection. A small not very loud backfire is fairly common but if it is loud it is can be an exhaust gasket or packing problem (had the first on the Burgman we no longer own and the second on a BV 500 that was NOS - new old stock, replaced under warranty.) If it is either one get it fixed or you'll lose top end and acceleration plus our BV 500 gas mileage dropped 40% until it was fixed.
