Yeah I always got the "babysitting" comments as a single dad, right after they would get done asking me if I was the father. I won't rant on but it was quite frustrating.
It always annoys me when people talk about a father "babysitting" his children. My automatic reply is "he's not babysitting, he's being a parent!"
Yup! Agreed! Here's a recent article on slate.com entitled, "I'm not a hero for taking care of my kids: I'm also not baby-sitting them. I'm their dad."

Probably a case of hard learned lessons fathering sound procedures that are followed, most especially, when there is "no threat."

My wife answers a fair amount of questions over the phone as a librarian. She has a bit of an accent, and also has a bit of trouble sorting out what people are trying to say, but I'd say she functions at least at 95% (which is 20% above what a few of our finest around here can speak ).

She has several times run into a bit of a problem with someone who asks "Can I speak to someone who speaks English?" It's probably one of her most galling moments. We've spent a couple of conversations coming up with creative and smartass replies. It's at least entertaining.

Unfortunately, at work you just have to roll with it.

I will never forget crossing the land border between Jordan and Israel at Eilat when I was working in Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.

As a group of us (of mixed nationalities, both men and women) pulled our suitcases along behind us, walking along the road in no-mans land. I realised that we were being studied from the Israeli side by several soldiers with binoculars.

As we got closer, I realised that several machine gun nests were also directed at us and closer again that more than a dozen different soldiers were aiming rifles and machine guns at us as we casually strolled across the border. Suddenly it struck me that every single soldier was a female! I am not embarrassed to admit that I was terrified but ashamed to admit that it was because they were all women. It was truly one of the scariest moments in my life. I don't think it makes me sexist but it sure made me nervous!

Gotta love the "self preservation" instinct that all Israeli's seem to possess. 8)
I'm sure Fatboy remembers things exactly that way. After all, if you live in a society where it is not a common thing to see soldiers (male or female) armed with automatic assault rifles, suddenly being surrounded by a bunch of them is probably a bit intimidating.

But I assure you that there is no way that any of those guns were aimed directly at you or any other person. Having served here, I can tell you that any solider who aims his/her weapon at a human being without the clearly formed intent / need to fire, is in for some serious jail time.

But yes, we Israelis have a very well developed instinct for self preservation... although I doubt anyone would have considered Fatboy Chubby much of a threat.
I was a lot leaner and meaner looking in those days but, you are probably correct Trepp, in that the guns business ends were not pointed directly at us.

Walking into a burger joint (mcdonalds I think) afterwards and being followed by a dozen or so soldiers who all put their rifles against a table and lined up in the queue. Only for a coporal stabnding at the front, to send one back to stand by the guns was an even more incredulous site to me!
