So the chest strap battery in my conventional Polar heart rate monitor (used for fitness) has expired. While contemplating replacement I noted that there are a few new 'fitness bot' type devices that you wear on your wrist and they track all sorts of data (from fitness output to sleeping patterns). I know Nike and Jawbone make one.

You can then upload the data and use it in various ways.

Is anyone using such a device? What brand? Does it actually work? And what are you primarily using it for?

I was hoping this was going to be a thread about a robot that would exercise for me, so that I didn't have to.

Leaving disappointed.

I recently researched these too. bottom line...still nothing better then the polar heart strap type units. The new ones are pretty nice. I pucked up a couple of the new polar FT7, FT40 would have been nice too.

I can't see working out without one. We even wear them walking the dog, doing yardwork.

I use a fitbit flex but it doesn't measure pulse so if that's part of your criteria I don't know that any of the wear it on your wrists will replace your current setup since it doesn't give you heart rate exactly but steps and activity level.

I've been using it to monitor how much activity I'm doing during my rehab from April's accident. I don't bother to track food though I did that for a while with the previous fitbit clip-on I have. I forgot to bring the old one to Breckenridge so when I bought one in Denver I went for the newer wrist model. I like that it tracks steps, I log other activity including with the newest update "very active" minutes. Gives me an estimate of calories burned plus that it syncs with my iPhone by Bluetooth. It is water resistant enough I can take a shower with it but not swim my laps or water aerobics. None of them are and it seems more comfortable than some of the other bands. Some of which require you to remove and plug into your computer to sync. By checking the app I can see if I've been drinking enough water - something very important at altitude in the dry climate here.

I've used it a few times to monitor sleep but it really doesn't tell me much that I couldn't figure out myself but does make a pretty picture with colors for sleep, wake and restless. I looked at the UP and Nike Fuel Band but Fitbit does what I wanted, has easy to use apps/sync and cost less.

I have washed and killed 2 fitbits. lost the 3rd. They dont do well with water. They also dont wont give you true calorie burn either. They are nice little tools. Just depends on what you are looking for. My wife found once she started using the HRM that she wasnt burning the calories everything else said she was. This helped her a great deal to have acutal info

Which is why I don't wear the fitbit flex swimming. It is the newest one and far more water resistant than the old ones that told you not to shower or other damp activities with it.

Sorry to disappoint!

Will this do? All you have to do is stand there, plus it's vintage and all vintage things are cool... just walk down Valencia.

I use the Polar FS1 and am pretty happy with it. Heart rate only with (of course) settable alarms for high and low. (But what else do you need.)

I've replaced the battery in the watch twice (so I've obviously had it a while) and taken it many times on travel. Just about bullet proof.
