Yea, dont mind my and vaders banter.

We live close by and I extend our jabbing on to the forum occasionally.

He's much more polite and nice than I am.

We have compared ourselves to Oscar and Felix from the Odd Couple.

Vader is neat and tidy one and I wear a Dorfman and have a foul mouth. 8)

I don't like to drag up something from back on the first page, but I do have some welding and fabrication skills. If I were to try to manufacture those racks, in lots of less than several hundred at a time, they would cost more than $250 by the time we got them all chromed and the upholstered pads attached. I would not be 'cleaning up'.

Make of that what you will.

We have been looking at making these for a few years now and just got around to looking at the economics of them. Our first prototype will be out in a month or so and looking at doing a run of 200 just to see where it stands. apparently it's a midwest race.

Gickspeed, you can have the race. You're a known entity, so you can probably move 200 units. I wouldn't know where to start and I have non-scooter related business to run as well. I look forward to seeing the prototype.

If we're in a race I think it's with my man Ian's 'Nam-bretta you're sourcing an engine for (that is you right?) I need to get mine street legal in time to ride with him.

Scootwinn, it's about volume. A single one might be a couple hundred dollars to fabricate because it would be all experimental. If we were building a couple dozen then I could start building fixtures to do repeatable work, but there would still be significant tooling expense as part of each unit. Once you get into hundreds, then the tooling expense is spread across more units and you can actually sell a reasonably priced product.

...and that is why I don't work on other people's bikes for money.

that's if i can get them priced under 2 bills. i can't see selling too many over $200, but maybe. Used ones are going for $75-125. scoot.net used one lately going for even more. The American market is very, very tough.

The single hardest thing on these is the bend on the back rest that goes into to the BBQ rack.

This is the only part of the rack I actually dislike. I'd suggest a version with no backrest. They make a functional rack but the backrest seems superfluous to me or my needs. Maybe this could cut down on your fabrication costs.

I almost never need the backrest I like the way it looks just the rack with maybe a low grab/bungee bar...

If you are going to go to the trouble of making them, make the curved lower brackets to allow for a spare wheel to be mounted under it.

Well, I hate to say this, but here goes. You're American working on American wages, but if you had a team of Vietnamese, Thais, Cambodians... (name your eager Third world South East Asian global neighbors. The Chinese would probably scoff at such small time shit.) doing the work for you, it might work out economically. Have a "quick" read of Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith.

Well, yeah, but that wasn't what was suggested. On the first page it was suggested that someone with some metal skills could clean up on some repops. I was just explaining why it wasn't gonna be me.

I might look at India, which you've left off your list. They have been doing some really nice quality reproductions for British bikes and it might be easier to get them to provide work that's closer to standards of demanding scooter collectors.

there are a couple different versions of it. The P200 and Rally already rolls with a spare, so that one does not make it to the top of the list.

i hear you. i run my P in Indy without the backrest. My P in Nam runs it for those long distance rides through NAM and Cambodia with a passenger.
