Does anybody know a good (not the cheapest but not the most expensive) modem for my Internet. We're now being charged over $6 a month and it seems ridiculous not to have my own. Thanks in advance

Do you want wireless in your house Judy? If you have a PC plugged in, on a desk at a fixed point you can get quite a cheap modem. If you have a laptop and you want to use it anywhere around the house, even out on the deck on a nice day then go wireless. This can also support your smartphone and any portable devices you may own in future.
NetGear brand seem good quality and reasonably priced. |

Motorola makes a wide range of very good modems. Much better than the ones you rent from the cable companies. Depending on which one you choose it may take you a couple of years to offset the rental fee but you will have a much better product. I purchased an inexpensive modem(linksys) that works fine and is inexpensive but I would love to upgrade to a Motorola. The SB6141 is one that has very good reviews.

Is there still dial-up available
You may want to ask your Internet provider which modems they support. That way, if you have any issues connecting or setting up you modem/router the provider will walk you though the process. |

I wish Hayes still made modems.
If you're looking for a wireless router/switch then ActionTec (sp?) makes a decent one. |

I am not sure who your provider is, but Time Warner Cable provides a list of acceptable and supported modems for you to purchase, on their website. You can take that list and go to Amazon (or somewhere else on the internets) and find reviews of a modem that you think will fit your needs. It does seem to me that the Motorola modems get a ton of great reviews on Amazon, for whatever that means! Good luck, as I am in the process of doing the exact same thing.

Sorry for not saying DSL. I need WiFi. NC thanks for the tip. $6 and change a month for heir crappy modem isn't cutting it. Will look at their site. I can;t get away from them out here. Clear wire says their "full" no slots for a couple of months and the other one can't stream netfix.
