I was leafing through a large hardcover cookbook this morning and was getting annoyed that the paper book cover 'jacket' kept falling off. Most of my cookbooks have jackets. I guess they serve as a low level protector from minor cooking spills and splatters, but it still paper protecting paper. Many hardcover books still have the cover.

You would think that in with the book industry feeling the pinch from electronic reading devices they would save the paper, ink and process and eliminate the cover. It would also be a nice step towards reducing paper use (even though it's still a book) .

If you woul really like to protect your cookbooks, you can do it the way that libraries do: http://www.brodart.ca/book-jacket-covers/

A book jacket is the cheapest way for publishers to put multi-coloured artwork on a hardbound book cover. They want the books to look nice to the eye. Believe it or not, most people judge a book by its cover

I always used to remove the jackets because I thought they made the books look garish.

I was considering putting some books up for sale recently, and found that they were worth a lot less because of the missing jackets.

If I knew then what I know now, I'd still have removed the jackets, but I would have stored them somewhere.
