I've been reading a lot about scooters here. I never knew there was as much maintenance required for them. So far I can see that the belt and rollers need to be replaced fairly often, about every 10K miles. That doesn't bother me too much, as I work on cars for a living and replacing the belt and rollers looks to be a lot easier than working on Caddy's, Fords, half the Japanese cars and pretty much anything from Germany.

As much as people talk about replacing the rollers and belts, I do have a question....what about the rear part? I don't even know what it's called, but it's the other half of the CVT with the spring and cones and what appears to be clutch pads that engage the rear wheel through centrifugal force (?) How often do they need to be serviced, and what kind of servicing do you do to them? Or are they pretty much just clean them with a belt change and ride until they fail, then replace. Or don't they fail very often?

The clutch/bell housing assembly is pretty durable. There is some mention of the idler wheel/pulley needing replacement bearings but it is not a common failure. A light clean and abrading of the bell housing and discs with a fine grade carborundum paper or scotchbrite does the trick.
