Well not really, servicing my Vespa would have been a better title. Anyway, I'm still new to the Vespa world , 11 months and almost 6,000 miles in to it and lovin' every mile so far.
I've had the dealer do the service so far but I'm thinking of digging in and take over some of the maintenance. The only things I've done myself so far is installing a power adapter and momentary switch for the GDO, replaced the airfilter and replaced the rear tire. All of which I learned from you guys in this wonderful forum.
Since the 300 is currently my only mode of transportation I'd like to get to know it inside and out. I haven't worked on my own cars since I started earning a real paycheck some 20 years ago, so it's not like I'm trying to save money. I'm not even sure if it's much cheaper to do it myself but I'm intrigued to try it. So, I guess my question to all you veteran wrenchers out there is, "is the 6,000 mile service a good place to start to be my own service guy?"
Or is it way out of my league and I should stick to oil changes and topping off fluids?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely do it yourself. One special tool you will need to buy is a variator holding tool - a clutch holding tool (which you also need) can be cheaply made by suitably bending a U-bolt. The money spent on tools will be less than the labour cost of one service. Plus your bike won't be tied up at the shop while you want to ride.

Another great advantage of doing your own servicing is that you'll have a much better appreciation of the workings of your scoot, and you'll be able to recognise and nip any incipient problems in the bud.

Here is an excellent video on changing the drive belt and variator servicing. It goes over the tools and parts necessary to successfully do the job. I was a scooter newbie, but the excellent instruction gave me the confidence to do the job. It came out great!

PS - I bought the complete overhaul kit which included the variator rollers, drive belt, variator tool and the clutch holding tool.I recommend that you go this route as you will be changing the belts again soon!

Why do they always use nice, clean scooters for these videos. No screws are sticking, and most can be removed easily by hand after loosening. This is very far from reality. At least from mine.

Bitsa?
How does a post with this title go more than 24 hours without comment from Bitsa? Can someone check on him? It is possible that he's ill and needs help.
