I had to go to the DMV today to register my new Vespa and everytime I go to the DMV I never see well-off people.

Not that "well-off" people look a specific way but I mean, 90% of the people don't even speak english at my DMV. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I guess I never see people say people in suits talking about mergers and acquisitions etc, or women in fashionable hats talking about where they summer.

I guess I'm just trying to avoid the DMV since it is such a catastrophic waste of time. How the hell do rich ppl avoid having to go the DMV?

I don't fall into either of those categories unless a yellow Shoei is considered a fashionable hat. I avoid the DMV by using my AAA membership. The office near me is almost always without a line. That leaves a lot more time to hang out on internet forums.

We have the option of mail in or going online and charging fees.

I mail it in and get the sticker in a reasonable amount of time.

Registration fees have been going rising year after year and goes into the General Fund. Jumped from $72.05 in 2011 to $92.35 in 2012 a 32% increase. Haven't seen 2013 yet.

I don't mind the folks in the DMV line as much as the change in the mix of folks on the streets...we're really seeing a lot of transients around all neighborhoods even the upscale neighborhoods they just hang out side of convenience stores, etc...I don't know where they are coming from and I expect a lot more. Sad...

If you purchase new (or used) vehicles from a dealer, they will send a runner to do your reg for a fee (so worth it!!),

You can renew licenses and registrations by mail or internet, then you only have to appear once every 10 years or so for an eye test and new photo.

The people you're seeing at the DMV buy cars vehicles privately, messed up on insurance or have to prove they paid tickets or taxes before they get their paper. It's not because their low-class, it's because some people have to struggle a bit to get by.

I am the bluest of blue-collar, often broke, and I haven't been to a DMV in many years. It just takes planning and organization.

My only interaction w DMV is registration renewal and license renewal. It's very easy and efficient using their on line service. Reg stickers are mailed out within a couple weeks. I haven't visited DMV in years.

Okay well for example I just bought a used Vespa. I'm sure rich people buy things used as well.

How could I have avoided the DMV? Is there a way to do your registration/title transfer without going in if you dont have AAA?

Damn I would have done this had I known. I'd be too worried about things getting lost in the mail though....

but I guess thats why a rich person would probably have it certified and FedEx'd.

Usually the "rich person" has an empolyee take care of it. Some politicians have their own DMV at the stat capitol. Some people deal with it online or thru the mail.

I'm not rich but I HAVE stayed at a Holiday Inn Express..... Ad +1 on AAA Membership... Mine is right up the street and it is MUCH more civil than the DMV. Don't even get me started on the DMV here.

You have this one right in my experience. Most people do routine transactions through an auto dealer or on the net. Most of those folks waiting in the 3 hour line at the DMV are dealing with lost titles, out-of-state vehicles, salvage titles, expired registration, and other issues that require documentation. (and, no, I wouldn't wish an afternoon at the DMV on my worst enemy )

Well, my P200, with a VIN of 1100 means I have to go in to register because the Online does not work for that low of a VIN and mailing it in gets me a request to come in to get the tags.

Just about to do that, got the letter yesterday and opened it about 10 min ago...

I tend to do it online unless it is something I have to handle in person such as title transfers, at least in Texas. The $2 convenience fee for online transactions is much better than driving downtown where I'd have to pay to park. The location closer had lines 3-6 times as long (never been out of there in less than 45 minutes and can take 2 hours or more) but downtown has never taken more than 15 minutes. If I have to go downtown I prefer to take the scoot since nobody seems to care if I park it across the street at the bike rack. I've done so in front of cops without any problems.

Though if I can like with transferring registration on the Sports City from Colorado to Texas I'll send my 20 year old son. After all he's the one that rides that scoot so he should have to deal with the transfer paperwork.

I do all I can by mail or on-line. Only really have to go to DMV to replace lost drivers license. Most other transactions happen at the county office or by mail/on-line. County offices are pretty streamlined, if you avoid busy times. DMV are a mess, but I've found being at the door about 20-30 minutes before they open is the key to a quick in and out.
