To be fair, you don't have to mount it on a rim and ride it.
Maybe you could make jewelry? a wallet? bumpers for your garage wall so you don't scuff a vehicle when pulling in? quirky gift cards? funky modern coasters? re-sole a shoe? lots of stuff

Incredibly generous instinct and gesture. In the finest tradition of MV. My hat's off to you.
The only thing I can think of that would be even more praiseworthy would be for someone local to please step up and claim the tire so that it doesn't accidentally fall into the hands of someone foolish enough to try and mount it on a working scooter.

Thanks for the offers vespa auntie and celeste. I've used a Sava as a mounted spare on long rides. It also was perfectly fine on a cross-country ride I took in 2011. If I was closer to you, I'd take it.

Not knowing anything about Sava tires, I'm taking it that they're bottom of the barrel? Do they come on all new Gts scoots?

clear this up
OK Fact Sava tyres are rock hard, do not warm/wear out up or grip to anything and are pretty scary in the wet for the aforementioned reasons.
They truly are the cheapest of the cheap. I'd compare them to a Chinese tyre but.......yeah that's fair. Their racing tyres however are something else. Bill X |

Thank you for the kind offer. I had 2 that I took off the scoot and the garbage man took them. Very kind gesture for someone not as fortunate as the rest of us who might be needing to replace a bald tire.

Sorry if you think that I'm taking the jam out of your doughnut but it's only when you upgrade to Pirelli's or Michelin's do you realise just how vague and detached the Sava's can feel.
I've been riding for a fair while now and they are close to the worse tyres I've ever ridden on. It would be interesting to hear any comments from any rider who has gone back to them. I have to second Trepps comments. Sorry. Bill X |

I apologize to the OP for being snarky and rude.
I was, however, being sincere when I said it was a very generous instinct and gesture. I also meant it when I said that such generosity was in the finest tradition of MV. I am sure the OP wouldn't knowingly offer up something broken or potentially dangerous to the folks here on MV. But IMHO, a used Sava is potentially dangerous to an inexperienced rider... and even to an experienced rider under the right (wrong) set of circumstances. Back when my scoot was new and I was still relearning how to handle two wheels, I almost dropped the scoot more times than I can count because the stock Savas were so squirrelly and refused to grip the road in anything but bone dry conditions. It was truly terrifying. I switched them out to Pirellis within a few months... well before the savas were anywhere close the being worn out. So yes, my comment was unnecessarily snarky, and for that I sincerely apologize. But I stand by my opinion that I wouldn't knowingly let my worst enemy ride on that free tire in the rain. |

No offense taken by me.
I put Michelin's on before the rains arrived due to advice on this forum. My confidence level soared. Now I don't think twice about riding in afternoon showers. (Thunderstorms cause me to stop undercover when lightning cracks overheard.) In Florida we have tire disposal fees and you can't just put them out with the trash. Thought somebody might have a use before I repurpose them. I had thought about a tire swing for my chickens but after my weekend road trip, I had 2 1/2 out of 4 chickens and then the next day I had 0 chickens. I'm currently trapping raccoons at the rate of 1 a day. Question - if these are such crummy tires, why does Vespa put them on the scooters? Bottom line is a poor excuse when we're already paying top dollar for the machine. |

AUNTIE and CELESTE i will apologize for the rudeness and thank you for offering them up. You took the tires off your bike and probably thought they were ok. Not everyone keeps up with current things on here. Please don't let this turn you off from the forum your both nice and sincere, good people.

It was truly terrifying. I switched them out to Pirellis within a few months... well before the savas were anywhere close the being worn out. . This and the dozens of other responses throughout 2007, 2008, and 2009. We don't have rain grooves but the techniques used to overlay concrete roads with asphalt are similar in that giant saws groove the concrete and it's much the same result. Fortunately I knew, from reading MV what to expect my tires to do. The reality was nothing like the stories I read. I had a firm grip but throughout the ride felt as if I could the thrown or lose control at any minute. It wasn't fun, it wasn't the kind of fear generated by thrill seeking. It was just plain scary. At the time I remember noting how a new rider, happily scooting along on their new Vespa GTS, totally unsuspecting would feel when it happened to them. I'm certain we read at least one report of someone going down. We had numerous reports of tread separation, bubbled surfaces, and horrible wet road response. This was a tire on an entry scooter for many adults. Sava was the worst product Piaggio ever stuck a customer with IME. Starting out I wanted to learn to ride in all conditions. I found the scooter with the Sava to constantly feel like I was not in total control. A completely different feeling from any of the tires I used since then. BTW my Sava came off at the first service. So some of us are high mileage riders and perhaps had previous experience on PTW's and the Sava didn't seem so bad. But for some of us they were miserable and dangerous. Period Auntie's a peach no matter how or what is said. |
