Modern Vespa

I was going to wait until midnight PDT, but I'm getting sleepy. And since it's already past midnight on the East Coast (and thus officially August 1st) I'm calling it.

As of this moment, the next Modern Vespa Limited Edition patch -- this one is titled "33" -- is available for order. This patch was the winner of the MV 2011 Patch Design contest, submitted by MV member Rae.

There are only 50 of these in existence, and only 40 of them are for sale. These will not last long.

Wow, that didn't take long...

And that encourages me to do more.

So. What's the consensus? Does a custom limited edition, certified authentic collectors patch actually get mounted on a piece of riding gear? Does it sit in it's packaging tin and act as a high priced coaster? What are everyone's plans for these. I expect I'll sew it onto the chest of my most favoritest mesh jacket. And be a bad ass with a patch that most people don't have

I'd be surprised if any kind of consensus emerged.

Some people certainly bought it to sew on a jacket. Some bought it intending to do just that, but never get around to it. Still others bought the patch to support the forum and/or have a momento of a place they enjoy spending time... without any clear plan for what to do with it.

But I doubt anyone bought it with the expectation that it would some day be a valuable commodity.

Limited edition in this context doesn't mean the patch must be stored in a vault and will some day be worth a fortune as a rare collectible. Let's face it, unless Jess invents cold fusion in his garage and frees the world from dependency on fossil fuel, these patches aren't going to be worth any more in five, ten or twenty years, than they are today.

But to anyone who has spent time here and come to enjoy MV as a place where scooterists gather among like minded people who understand our odd hobby... these patches are, and will remain, priceless, whether they end up coated with bug guts on a riding jacket, or remain pristine in the tin in a desk drawer.

I haven't sewn a patch on yet. Stickers, have been applied though. Today's riding jackets aren't sew friendly with all the different layers and armor.

I haven't had my 'that's where they go' moment yet. Besides, I keep crashing out my riding jackets.

What patches I've sewn on are on a messenger bag I sometimes carry around at rallies.

No clue what I'll do with the ones I have. Right now I have some in Houston and some in Breckenridge that are just laying around my desk from here and Amerivespa or other rallies I've attended.
