The Roentgens' Berlin Secretary Cabinet

A writing cabinet crowned with a chiming clock, it features finely designed marquetry panels and elaborate mechanisms that allow for doors and drawers to be opened automatically at the touch of a button. Owned by King Frederick William II, the Berlin cabinet is uniquely remarkable for its ornate decoration, mechanical complexity, and sheer size.

That is an amazing piece of work... I wonder how many keys go with that cabinet?

That museum has been closed since January 2012. Must go see this cabinet when they open again.

Makes me even more annoyed when my glovebox sticks.

And I get a kick out of a box that plays music when you open the lid...

The whole thing made with lollypop sticks. I get a kick from sharpening a pencil and not drawing blood.

I found another great example of beautifully crafted wood working meets mechanical ingenuity.....

That's nothing. I push in my key, give it a turn, and the fuel filler lid pops open.

Usually.

Sometimes it's the trunk.

OK, maybe the desk is pretty good. But is it fast?

A zillion years ago these things were created using a hand bow to power a tiny hand lathe and a bunch of hand tools made from crap metal....

And today Volkswagen, using all of the CNC powered machines centers and beautiful unobtainium coated carbide cutters available now can''t make a set of door locks that work over one year in the modern age.....

So where's the progress???
