My son just took (and passed) the California Two-Wheel Motorcycle Examination. I looked over the exam and I'm not sure I would've passed. A few questions seem pretty ambiguous. Some of the so-called correct answers were debatable, at least to me.

Here are a few:

Riding in the center portion of the lane:
A. Should be avoided if possible
B. Keeps other drivers from seeing you
C. Keeps other drivers from sharing your lane

Or this:

Most collisions involve riders who:
A. Were experienced riders
B. Overbrake the rear tire
C. Underbrake the rear tire

Or this:

Alcohol affects which part of the brain first:
A. Judgment
B. Balance
C. Speech

Well?

Good to see I'm not the only one who found them ambiguous.

I'll post what California considers the "correct" answers after a few more people weigh in.

A, ride in the left part of the lane so driver ahead has you in the side mirror and rear view
A, uh just a guess, to point out that you shouldn't get cocky just because you've been at it awhile
A, is there any question.

California thinks the correct answers are:

C
B
A

Having ridden bikes for 30+ years, I avoid the center strip if at all possible - too slick and lacks visibility. I would have answered A.

I would be willing to bet more collisions involve experienced riders than overbraking the rear brakes. I would have answered A.

As for what alcohol impairs "first", I think it's a toss up, both balance and judgment are equally impaired, so I say they should accept either A or B.

The answers are in the what every driver must know motorcycle version.

They teach using the center in MSF class, but also talk about situations where it isn't appropriate. For the 2nd question what they want to emphasize is that you need to use both brakes, which is a common problem with bikers without any formal training who prefer to use rear only. For the 3rd, we all know beer goggles come on before stumbling .
