When the time comes that non-running 50 specials are really worth $2,500, I'm done.

The engine is not worth having on the scooter, the low power output limits the way it rides (not being able to go on HWY,s not being able to ride two people, not being able to go uphills)

The issue here is that it's not worth what he's asking, even original w/ low miles for half of that money it's no deal. |

I went on a rant a few months ago about American pickers. I just ended up letting everyone know what a fool I was for bitchin' about a lousy deal. Anywhoo, the seller can ask any price they want. Sure does not mean it will be selling.

Wanna see crazy? Here's a bodge for $5k....
http://outerbanks.craigslist.org/mcd/4226423198.html My 1962 VBB was advertised on CL for $3k. I called the guy anyway thinking that it would still be out of the range of what I would like to pay for it but that maybe I could score a deal. Went out there and met him and was blown away by the scooter, had been in a barn since 1982 and looked great and all original. I offered him what I thought it was worth and then he told me he had a guy from NY coming down to get it for $2k but that he told him I had first dibs. Well I wasn't prepared to offer $2k for a VBB regardless of how pristine, especially if I'm gonna be rebuilding an engine. At the end of the day, he called me back saying the guy from NY flaked and that he wanted to see this scoot to go to a knowledgeable good home. Sometimes people are attached to these items and they'll score you a deal (I paid $1,500 which I think was worth it for the pedigree) just to see their baby go somewhere where it'll be taken care of. |

I was just talking with co-worker in the kitchen about buying a motorcycle or scooter. She mentions she used to ride vespas and that she has two that have been sitting in a garage for 13 years because she has kids and no longer rides. I got my 1980 P2 for $400. After fixing it up I starting probing about the other one. She says she won't sell it because of sentimental reasons. Every couple months I make sure she hasn't changed her mind. ![]() |

I'm not sure if saying 'other make' is being completely honest either. The level of honesty in this world I think is hitting an all time low. I don't think 'buyer beware' should have to be the way we live our lives. I'm sure with a $5k price tag the guy isn't going to be forth coming about the issues this scooter is going to have. If he was no one would give $5k or even $1k. And lets really be honest no one has an extra $5k sitting around to throw at a junk bike and just laugh when they discover it is not what they thought it was. Is it illegal to do this? Well not really, but isn't it behavior like this that got Jerry Sienfeld locked in jail? I know just a tv show. I only hope I teach my kids better than that and perhaps one day when God, Ala, Karma who ever is running this shindig decides it needs to rain for another forty days and forty nights they will get to ride their scooters up the big ramp onto the arc.
