Modern Vespa

I've been planning my scooter purchase a long time now -- starting back in 2011 when they started building the metro line extension out towards me in Reston VA. I had planned to wait until I could make my commute a scoot to the metro stop before buying my scooter (I can no longer remember why!!), but they delayed starting the line from Dec 1 to probably April 1, and I couldn't wait any longer. Just before Thanksgiving I purchased an LX150 brand new from Fredericksburg Motor Sports, and earlier today took a uhaul van down to pick her up. I just got back from my first ride, and I really can't fathom why I thought waiting until the metro opened was a good idea. I'm in love with scooting! Sadly we're due to get "wintry mix" of snow, sleet and freezing rain tomorrow, so this will be not only my first ride, but also my last ride for at least a week. I'll be praying for a return to clear weather -- cold I can take, up to a point.

Anyway, I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone here, both for answering some of my questions I posted, but also for providing tons of information over the years that I turned up in searches on this site. You made me feel so much better prepared for this experience.

I know -- you want pictures! My husband took some as I scooted away, and as soon as I get from him, I will post.

Grats on your LX150! If you let your husband ride it, he'll want one of his own. Riding with a partner is twice as nice.

You didn't mention your riding experience, but a Motorcycle Safety course will benefit you enormously. Besides an insurance discount, it'll give you new skills and confidence to battle the mean streets.

Thank you -- I took an MSF course in October and got my license then. I'm taking an additional "seat time" class in January. Info about the training was one of the many pieces of good advice I got here

Sounds like we have some things in common. I bought my 2009 LX150 off Craigslist about a year ago. Does you husband ride, too? If so, you are for sure a lucky gal.

What winter gear do you have? I just ordered the Tucano Urbano Termoscud and handlebar muffs. I still need to make a decision about which jacket, gloves, pants to buy. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Welcome and congratulations! So Google DC Spin Doctors (a scooter Meetup group in NoVA/DC/MD) and you'll know about all the rides we organize. You just missed 110 miles through Fairfax County on Saturday, but we usually get together at least twice a month. You'll enjoy the crew and learn a lot.

Lynda -- so far my winter gear is limited to very warm winter motorcycle gloves and a warm coat. I just ordered a neck gaiter so I don't have to mess with a scarf blowing in the wind (I almost lose them half the time while walking, no way I'm going to try to mess with a scarf while scooting). But I've been researching on this wonderful MV resource and am seriously thinking about the Termoscud and the mitts that affix to the handlebars -- let me know how you like yours. To be honest, my regular commute is short enough I'm not so worried about the cold other than my hands, but I will need something to keep my pants dry. I'm willing to skip riding on days that are snowy, icy, or otherwise seem unsafe, but there will be days when rain comes through, and I don't want to have to go to plan B commuting arrangements every time it rains.

By the way, I'm originally from Massachusetts, and I'll bet the Cape is a wonderful place to ride!

Daily -- thank you! I was wondering if there was any local scooter club -- none is listed in the MV list of scooter clubs (or maybe I only checked VA and not DC). Anyway, thanks for the tip! I am not quite up for a 100 mile ride yet, but by spring time I should be!

Xine, I recommend the lap apron that you wear like a quilted skirt., I have the opposite, a Termoscud that fits airtight to my specific bike. You see where this is going. A lap robe is yours forever, a Termoscud gets sold with the scooter.
