So, now that it is snow and ice (and idiot car drivers who don't slow down), i am looking for ideas on what you guys do for fun during the winter months when you cannot ride? Don't give me any of that nonsense about work and family, I said for fun......

Come visit me where it's HOT. Supposed to be almost winter and i'm sweating to death. Good time to detail the scooter fully. Read, start a hard puzzle, learn a language, drive yourself nuts, learn to cook etc etc. I was really good at driving myself nuts, so then i moved here. Good luck.

In Winter, all I do is dream of Spring! We can get a few rides in from time to time though.

Hope for more oil threads and pray for a melt off on the streets. Mid winter breaks in temp, even a 15-20 minute ride makes things better. This year is the hardest in 6 for me. I and to buy expedition type mittens to stay warm. If my legs were better I'd love to go X country skiing. I always loved my skinny skis and winter in the woods along the Mississippi River bluffs.

Ski! Proper ski areas aren't really in Iowa but they do have them.
http://skicentral.com/iowa.html The experience of skiing is close to that of riding a Vespa. It's a great sport and really keeps you excited for the snowfall. |

As long as it's freezing, might as well get more snow so I can take the kid out cross-country skiing, and the family out snowshoeing a few times. Otherwise it's hang around the house more, and do a bit of woodworking....need to make that bed I promised my wife 10 years ago.

I'm in southern california. So there is little to be said for the seasons. I ride year around as my scooters are my sole form of transportation. In the winter I use rainy days as good time to detail the scooters, necessary maintenance, and ordering far too much riding gear online.

Big respect to my northern brothers and sisters, winter can be a bitch, especially after the new year, when it seems like April will never come. We plan to travel in January and February, then come home to enjoy Springtime in the Bluegrass.

I was riding last week and then the snow, slush and ice hit the DC area. I have a Termoscud to install, heated grips and a tall windscreen. Hopefully, when it hits about 40 during the day and there isn't much ice, I'll be back to commuting to work at least part of the time. I refuse to surrender to winter, I make my sneak attack rides whenever the weather permits.

Missing daylight
We had the same temps as the North Pole this week and still under a wind chill warning here in Winnipeg. I agree with Ravenlore - Stay indoors and surf for parts to continue restoration on my '63 VNB.
Presently @ -34C (-30F) with the windchill and the sun set at 4:30pm. Forgot to plug my car in Sunday and thus it wouldn't start Monday. The best part of yet...January and February are our coldest months and spring won't arrive till at least the end of May. Eric |

"Winter" here is a time for the permanent residents of the Island to share time socializing a bit. Weather may not be great, but no demands of tourism to keep the working folks on the job 14+ hours/day. Thus, trips to the market, etc, are leisurely and a chance to "catch up". Cafes are also a good place to meet and chat. Rain and high winds may make riding a chore on occasion, but the ability to enjoy more social time makes up for it a bit. The winter rains turn the island a beautiful green, something that we permanent residents can enjoy, while the "brown of summer" is for the tourists.

The doctor told me I can start riding again in March, so I'm not going through the frustration of wishing I could ride if the weather would just co-operate.
It's a done deal. Knowing that, I'm dealing with it by... Coming up with ideas and making preliminary plans for next year's touring. Picking up little odds and ends to add to my camping gear. Ordering up a few items for the bike to have ready to install come warmer weather, and replacing worn out stuff...I could use a new pair of riding gloves. ...And doing a lot of reading. Much more than usual. I have a stack of books I'm going though, and I think my Kindle is about to overheat. ![]() |

Well, I stand the cold and wet as long as I can. Then I go visit friends in SW Florida. Excellent winter riding weather! So good that I keep a scooter down there for winter visits.
