Fellow scooterist/motorcycle riders,

Do you know 100% if a Florida title for a scooter/motorcycle needs to be notarized? I am about to purchased a Lambretta from out of state (Florida) and the title is only signed and printed but not notarized.

Your help is much appreciated.

I finally got it, pictures here:

I cannot answer with 100% certainty. However here is a link that might help.

http://www.seminoletax.org/tags/forms/newresident.pdf

This shows what they require to bring a vehicle INTO Florida. However, I believe you need to focus more on the Arizona laws:

http://phoenix.about.com/cs/car/ht/registervehicle.htm

Regardless, I would err on the side of caution and take the extra step to have it witnessed and notarized. It won't hurt anything.

If you search for samples of a Florida title form, you will find that is has no provision for a notary, just seller's signature. That should offer a strong hint that FL does not require a notary to sell a vehicle.

It might be worth a call to the local DMV to see what they require for an out of state purchase.

FL resident living in NM...
Hi hi..

Bought and sold cars and 1 motorcycle in FL for last 15 years. My residency is still Destin, FL but I'm currently in NM with the DH while he is stationed here in the AF..

okay- credentials aside

To my knowledge the only time anything needs to be notarized is the Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification form for vehicles with prior registration outside Florida. Otherwise a bill of sale and the title with signatures is all you need.

Florida provides a bill of sale form here: http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/forms/btr/82050.pdf

GO TO THE TAX OFFICE TOGETHER, there's one in every county, sometimes two. Transfer the title over and then you will be certain it is 100% kosher. Good luck.

Kat

I am willing to guess that scooterist is not going to be physically present in FL to take possession of the vehicle, nor is he seeking a FL title. It is possible in all 50 states to directly transfer a title, via sale, from an owner in one state to a new owner in another, without a new title in the first state. Been there, done that, more than once, and each state with its own wrinkles, but not in AZ.

Checking with the local DMV is easy enough. If I were a DMV agent and a client arrived without the proper documents, I don't think I would be impressed by being told, "Well, someone told me on MV that this is all I need."

Looks like you have your answer. FWIW I have never notarized a title when selling a vehicle. Simply sign and hand it over. Also, have never purchased a vehicle with a notarized title and never had problems with registration.

Folks,

Thank you so much, I ended up buying it and I promise that I will get you some pictures (hopefully tomorrow).

My next door neighbors work on the DMV, 3 members of the family, one of them works from home and has access to the master database but at the time of the post it was too late to bother them.

This morning they gave me the information that I needed and I went this afternoon and purchased the scooter.

It is a 63 Lambretta LI 125cc but with a cylinder kit to 175cc, it also has been converted to 12volts and is running a delorto sliding 25mm carb, it starts on the first try. It virtually looks as if the scooter was buried underground and left in the Arizona desert, it has tons of scratches, dents and surface oxidation and fading, just the way I like a scooter of this year.
