Hey guys,

So I'm working at a customers house and we're talking about cars - and Vespas come up. He says "Do you know anything about them?" So we go to his garage and he's got a white 1979 P200E in pretty decent shape. He wants to get it running as a pit bike, but who knows how interested he actually is.

It has 4,600 miles on it, the headset is cracked, but it all looks like it's there. So I checked out Scooterhelp and this is where it comes out as a 1979, but the pic of the taillight isn't right. I'll take pics tomorrow.

Oh, I looked in the tank and there is no rust, but some fugly gas in there, and it was last register in California in 1992 - hasn't run before that.

OK, so on to my question: The Serial Number on the frame is D6M 16773 OM, VSX1T. What does the D6M and OM stand for?

Thanks guys - I'm excited because here is a P200 that's been just sitting - not the prettiest, and by no means the find that the good Dr. found, but exciting none-the-less. Even if I can't get my hands on it, hopefully I'll be able to impart enough knowledge to the current owner so he doesn't trash it and calls me if he ever does want to move it on.

I think Rob Hodge did a pretty good write up about all the numbers and such. Do a search and it should come up. Sorry I could not help you more.

He wants it for a pit bike. So trashing it is exactly what is going to happen.

OK, so I got some pics. It's a 1980. We'll see what the owner ends up doing with it. I asked him if he does decide to get rid of it, to please give me a call first. We'll see.

Oh, and SFvsr, I highly doubt he'd trash it, but everyone is entitled to their opinion, even without meeting and experiencing who they are...

Direzione Generale Motorizzazione could be considered the Ministry of Transport
OM is an accepted abbreviation for Omologazione. In English literally homologation which signifies the official approval of the vehicle to circulate.

Well, that is disappointing. Pit bikes are made for thrashing. But hey - rich dude with the club racing circuit car can do what he wants. Maybe he can buy a Farro Basso or some shit like that and make it into a museum piece. Then you can pick from his tree if you get lucky.

get it started for him for the hell of it
might take a bit of work but it is all easy
- drain gas and oil
- new gas @ 2 %
- new oil in oil tank
- new lines both oil and gas
- carb rebuild / checkover
- carb base gasket kit / make sure oil pathways under carb box are cleared out...!!
- top end checked over
- torques on all nuts checked
- exhaust is ok
- battery is dead = need a new one or unhook the stator wire for that charging coil to the reg and cap it so the reg doesn't get fried.
- check case oil is not full of gas
- replace with non detergent 30 weight oil

start her up

make sure oil pump gear is working or no oil is getting to top end

have a moment when you can't stop the scoot after finding out the clutch corks are frozen together and the clutch is not working right.

free clutch up while riding around in a circle or using a long downhill road

he buys some PBR and the above parts / gas and oil

good afternoon for me
love getting another ride back on the road
