Since my 2009 mp3 500 (with 79 miles) hasn't been to the dealer in 4 years, does anyone know if there are any map updates that should be done?
Thanks

Forgot to do a search
I see there's a lot of discussion about many dealers not having a "navigator" to do the update. On my Triumph you can buy a cable for @ $50 that lets you download and update the ECU yourself from the internet. Anybody know if something similar is available for the mp3? I guess I'll call the dealer today to see if they have one. |

Yes an update is available, and strongly recommended (to avoid idle stall problem). You won't hurt anything in the meanwhile, running it as is.
Trust me on this.... go to Vespa Sherman Oaks... they are the ONLY ones in your area capable of doing it (for $50 BTW). Other shops will say that they can do it, only to find out (in our case) that when you bring it in, then "Sorry no update is available" or "we can't figure out how to operate the Piaggio computer" blah blah blah. |

Armed with a little more info, I went into my local Piaggio,Vespa, Aprillia, Moto Guzzi dealer to inquire about the ecu update. I was way-laid by a nice Italian lady, who insisted on making me an Espresso after introducing me to the service guys.
I asked if they had the Navigation to install the update. "Nope", he says. "We use the PADS system program/equipment that replaced the Navigation" They told me no problem to update-1/2 hour labor -$45.00- Budda Bing, Budda Bang! Will call to schedule for Friday after I check my schedule at work!. Friend of mine has purchased 2 new Aprillias from them this year and they've done right by him from the git-go. I'll keep you informed. |

Nope, Newportitalian. But was in the store earlier this afternoon to make an appointment, and the director of Piaggio service for the US was in the store. He told me that there are map updates for Europe, but not US You'd think he would know, but!!!???
Does anyone have the map update # for the latest map? May be worth it to run a diagnostic to see if any codes pop up and also see what map number is installed. |

If your statement is true, the director of Piaggio service is an idiot and I now understand why tech support sucks for dealers. |

Update is code# 1233GP40. This is specific to the 500 only. Found this from OAD back in April '12. It sure seemed to help them find it in my case. I hope it helps you as well

I did ask my local dealer here in Ireland and he said he could do it ok, but also said "if in ain't broke, don't fix it".
So as I do not have any issues at present, is it worth it, does it make any difference and if so, how????? 2007 Fuoco. |

Most, if not all of us with 500s, had a sputtering-to-stall issue when coming
to stops, especially bad with hard braking and cold engines. The motor seems to have a problem with clutch release and rpms dropping from it. At least that's when I was experiencing the problem. I just learned to regulate the rpms until I could get the update. It eliminated that issue completely and now I don't have to worry about sudden rpm drops causing sputtering, which can sometimes be saved, or out-right stalls I couldn't stop from happening. Some have reported improved mpg, for me it's about the same if not a couple mpg lower, but well worth the fix for the main problem. Seems that the problem was/is a fueling map issue. So you can live without it, but it's far better to have it and not worry about it later on, most likely at the worst possible time, as these things seem to enjoy appearing then. |
