Modern Vespa

the input shaft went south (no idea what causes that!) and dinged up the 2nd gear (3rd largest cog on a 4 speed conversion) it has one tooth thats got a chunk missing and a few others are in need of a filing to make smooth again.
also, the cruciform has rounded edges.
in my noob opinion, the cruciform is shot but im not sure about the gear. those suckers are like 100.00!
the input shaft gear that matches the 2nd gear lost every tooth...

these are the last few things im trying to figure out if they need replaced then im almost ready to make an order and put it back together.

As you answered your own question regarding the xiform, it's toast.. You could no doubt run that gear, but that's how stuff starts to go wrong.. it's weak, it'll eventually break off, and could do more damage than you want to deal w/. I'd replace both.. Xiform FOR SURE.. Gear maybe because I'm anal, but I would do it too.

That motor you got in that bike was ridin hard and wrong.

If you have it out and youre lookin at it.........replace it.

If you grind that gear down there will be an uneven wear area on the opposite face due to the lower profile of that tooth, and it may likely break off. The 3rd pic shows the hardened face of other teeth have been minced.

Ouch, It requires replacement. But at least you caught it before the debris wrecked other gears.
BTW have a look at the state of the other gear teeth closely for marks or damage and where the xform works on the inside of those gears. Your looking for munched marks from the debris and post pics if you find any your unsure about.

With the cruciform that worn, I wouldn't doubt that those gears will eat a new one in a few hundred miles...You need a new tree, also...

My suggestion, give yourself a nice new 4 speed kit for xmas!
