Hesitant to start "another oil thread" as on other forums, it's like opening a can of worms.

Having read Jimc's saga about the filter, I think I'll try to loosen the filter before I drain the oil?? Will the Oreilly or Napa filters prevent this from happening as they are slightly longer?

Type of oil- so, I see synthetic oil is the way to go, but should I use motorcycle specific oil w/o friction modifiers, or is regular automotive synthetic oil fine, as I understand the mp3 500 doesn't have a wet clutch?

I usually loosen the filter a wee bit while cold and then warm the engine and oil before draining and removing the filter. I have an old automtive filter wrench that squeezes 360 as the handle is pulled like a wrench, and it's always worked.

Like many here, I use Shell Rotella T6 oil, inexpensive and readily available.

Can't speak much to the filters you mention, wasn't aware Napa would have something that fits. I use the Hiflo HF184, usually scout the scooter sites and amazon for best price when I need a few.

Welcome to the forum of "another worms thread" ... LoL

When you do a "search" just make sure that you are doing your "search" in the MP3 Discussion area, as our scoot is different from the other scooters located in this ModernVespa forum website. That will help narrow your search some.

Oil Filters you can find on ScooterWest website. Buy a couple as you will be using them about every 3k miles.

Also while on the Scooterwest website. Pick up 2 Malossi double sponge air filters (Item M1414496) this way you will always have one ready to put on your scoot about every 2500 miles or if you been riding on dusty roads a lot. These are reusable air filters.

Be sure to get you the "gallon" size zip lock bags to store your air filters in between changes.

have fun with the search feature. we have ....

The NAPA 1374 filter is taller than stock.

Lots of discussion here on oil; I think the consensus is for Shell Rotella T6 (5W-40).

The best deal on the internet for a filter

http://www.powersportsuperstore.com/HiFlo-Oil-Filter-HF184-p/4127602.htm

FYI the NAPA filter I see on the web does not have the indentations on the top for the wrench. If it's taller you may be able to use a strap wrench.

I used the equivalent from O'Reillys. Can't remember the filter number but you can cross reference it with NAPA. I just did my oil this past weekend and I was able to loosen the filter with my hand.

NAPA is now made by WIX-# 51374 (same as O'reilly's). got one of those and the T-6 Rotella for the change.
Thanks all
