Modern Vespa

Not riding, that is. I haven't been on the bike since 12/1. I don't know how y'all that have a riding "season" stand not riding during the winter. I'm going stir-crazy, not being able to be out on 2 wheels due to injury.

Any tips on coping?

When it's too nasty out to ride, I take my mind off it by engaging in some enjoyable, ahem, indoor activities.

Some days I forget I even own a scooter.

Whats this winter you speak of? I go nuts when we get the torrential rains here. I won't ride in that. We once had 40 days of rain. That was a bummer but i had my car back then. We get it now and i'm screwed.

I know not this winter either! I'm off the bike with a broken collarbone. I just thought the winter prisoners would have tips on how to survive off the Vespa for extended periods of time.

It's definitely no fun , however I look forward to the occasional warm days and take a short ride,....it feels great Hey, the days are getting longer and spring will get here eventually....but if you will excuse me I have to go out and shovel some snow

A few weeks ago, I was talking to my neighbor about riding and he asked me if I was going to put it away for the winter. I told him "as long as there's no snow, I'll be riding". Between then and now (~3weeks), we've had almost a week and a half of subfreezing temperatures, 6" of snow, and this past weekend saw a record high of 70+ degrees.

I spent almost all of last week on the train due to the snow on the ground waiting for Mother Nature to clean up the mess. Gave me some time to catch up on my reading while taking the train to work and enjoy a few holiday parties where I usually wouldn't drink.

DR i grew up in upstate (near the mass border). We got lots of snow. Yeah my friend said it was hot and humid yesterday. Weird. It's been kinda hot here also.

85F today! This is just not right for Xmas unless you live in the southern hemisphere! Back in my day we had COLD xmases. All the way down to 70 sometimes!

It was 64 yesterday morning,early. Brrr. The norm here in 60's at nite (sometimes in the 50's) and high 70's during the day with the trades. No trades this year yet.d

Got to 60 in Ohio yesterday, mopped the garage floor and put accessories on my new GTV. Took it for a ride down the block. Today is 25

Mid 30's today, I had to run some errands, so off I went. Not so bad, I have gloves and some awesome liners from Vintage Red Matthew!

Wait I thought it was warm in Florida, I just looked up weather in Sanford, its like 75!

I don't know what weather you're looking at but Sanford/Orlando International airport is reporting 85. And it feels like it

Normally I'd be chomping at the bit. We are also coming off an unusual warm spell here...The last few days were in the 60's F. I'd have been off and riding but, like you, I'm sidelined while I recover from surgery. A hip replacement in my case.

But that circumstance actually made it easier on me. Knowing that I've been ordered off riding by the surgeon until March, and knowing that there's not thing one I can do about it, there's no question of me getting in the saddle, good weather or not. I've just resigned myself to being resigned to it.

Two more months to go. 8)

This is when we dream up modifications and accessorizing our scoots. I also read alot both non-scooter and scooter/biking books. Then there are all of the indoor projects that you let go all summer when riding. These need to get done to. But even after all that...I hate winter and it is hard for me to not be able to ride...you just have to suck it up.

I can ride all winter here, but when I'm away or at home with crappy weather, reading good fantasy novels works for me.

I couldn't stand not riding in the winter so I made a cons opus decision to expand my riding landscape -- cold, snow, slush, salt. Much is possible but not necessarily the same kind of riding you love.

In addition to Dibber's excellent suggestions, consider using the "down" season to plan trips for next summer! Then, too, there are lots of great scooter blogs online you can check out and live vicariously until it warms up again!

Strange but if any thing Brisbane's sub tropical climate makes it uncomfortable to ride in Dec and Jan due to the heat and humidity (though it doesn't stop us). The rest of the year is perfect though.

How do I handle not riding?

Not well.

We recently had a week of temps in the 20's. I thought it was never going to warm up. Luckily it only lasted for a little over a week. The people at work were getting tired of my grumpy mood.

I haven't ridden in the last couple days because of a cold-ish rain and then just cold-ish. I figure, below 50 degrees, I'm allowed the option, but I rarely take it. tsk, tsk, tsk.

Well, sadly here it is COLD, the snow is all gone now but a cold front moved in and we have frozen ground. I'm usually able to get in a ride here and there so I don't put my bikes "up" for the winter. Still they wait on a trickle charger for a warmer day. To my tropical pals, enjoy

Mine's ready at a moments notice....

My LX250 is grounded for at least 2 months. We are in beginning of winter in Wisconsin. The first month MADISON SULLY did maintenance on both scooters. I suspect that is how some get through the not riding time. Take it apart and see what makes it run.... or spend a lot of time watching Netflix and Videos of Scooter rides on MV

Errr yeah. Been riding everyday.

I like my job.. But riding to work is the best reason to go to work and back home
I just love it!

The bad season is when it is fun to have a project scooter to work on..might not be able to ride but can still have fun with scooters!

August 3rd was the last day I rode. My goal has been to get back on two wheels before December 31st but it doesn't look like that will happen.

It's hard, very hard. We recently took delivery of a new F700GS for my wife, and it has not been ridden yet: the missus says it is a show of solidarity to forgo riding it until I can join in. Or, maybe she just doesn't like the cold...

wow. congrats on the new F700GS. can i assume your wife is <6ft tall?
i am impressed that shorter people ride taller top heavy bikes like the GS/Vstrom/Versys.

it is rough taking delivery of a new bike and not being able to ride it. I took delivery of a new Versys on Nov 22 and the most i have ridden it is from outside my underground parking to its current parking spot (approx 100ft)

atleast i have to Honda Ruckus scooter to take some of the PMS pain away.

for three weeks, The Reno area was stuck with sub-degree temps. anywhere from -8 to around the teens or so. There was no riding to be had. it really sucked.

This week has finally shifted though, and I look forward to getting out a bit for the holiday.

I don't know how you all-year round folks can deal with Ice and snow under the tires.

I used to ride on the nicer days during the winter. Nicer days meaning I could navigate around ice patches in the neighborhoods. I also start the bikes on occasion and dream of towing them somewhere south where the roads are clear and the skies are sunny and warm.

Were doing a Christmas ride today. Will think of everyone who can't ride. This ones for you guys.

A respected local meteorologist posted to his blog an image from a NOAA model hinting at temps at or above freezing for a week or more in mid-january and i kid you not I nearly cried.
