Here's my ride home in some pretty crappy traffic.

Given the display on your speedometer a CHP officer could say what you did is not done in a safe and prudent manner and is therefore reckless. I split lanes but not like that. That kind of use of splitting will lead to California banning it. Crossing over the double yellow violates this: 21655.8. (a) Except as required under subdivision (b), when exclusive or preferential use lanes for high-occupancy vehicles are established pursuant to Section 21655.5 and double parallel solid lines are in place to the right thereof, no person driving a vehicle may cross over these double lines to enter into or exit from the exclusive or preferential use lanes, and entrance or exit may be made only in areas designated for these purposes or where a single broken line is in place to the right of the exclusive or preferential use lanes. $490 fine + 1 point on your record.

One thing about HOV lanes in the bay area you can get in and out and not feel locked in since there are fewer solid lines prohibiting the ins/outs. I was getting white knuckles watching the video. I'm not much for lave splitting. I wouldn't want to piss off a BMW or Lexus driver. I definitely don't trust Bay Area cage driver. The wife works for local PD and I hear too much about unlicensed drivers

14perry,
Have you rode down here in LA? Most bikes are going the same or higher speeds during my commute. My ride is no faster than most of the bikes on the road. |

I have done the 405 both day and night. I am just posting the guidelines as published. According to THEM this is outside the guidelines.

Seems like a longish commute. I know if I had to deal with that kind of traffic regularly, I would be a lane splittin' crazy fool. At 50-60 MPH, I was a bit white knuckled on the mouse, but you're obviously comfortable with it.
One other thing I noticed, you flasher early on in the video seemed to be flashing too quickly |

but it probably wouldn't look so bad if it was in real time. That looked like 120 miles per hour.

Very cool, you work in Glendale I see. I recognized the streets right away.
I once went down because of lane splitting, I hit someone mirror and I fell down. |

CrazyCarl its 30 miles each way.. been doing it long enough to feel okay with the ride. but then again it depends on the day, some are slower and some are faster. I'm trying now to keep my max speed at no more than 75mph period.
Maxx28 Yeap! Glendale it is.. Right on Brand. shdwst Thanks! have to have a little fun here and there. |

Wow
I have lived in Los Angeles my whole life. The highways are a real pain compared to the 60's and 70's but this kind of riding is very dangerous. Lane splitting with a Vespa at those speeds while traffic has stopped is beyond crazy. Even if this video was played in real time it still would look dangerous. All it takes is for one driver to move over and not see you.

He can do anything he wants to do. Yeah, some motorcyclists ride stupid, which is why the news keep posting "rider down." In 50 years on motorcycles on the streets I have never crashed. Compared with the '60's and '70's the rate of deaths/accidents is now more than tripled. People do not want to hear about riding safe. |
