I used to know a bunch of Harley guys in Denver who said you weren't a real biker until you had ridden to Sturges and back (no trailering), and you had ridden through a full Colorado winter.

I haven't ridden to Sturges, but I've ridden through 2 (going on 3) NYC winters, so I think that at least puts me in the 'determined' category.
I've ridden through Sturges on my way to Amerivespa June 2012 (4,400 round trip) but I don't ride in Breckenridge in the winter. I've come close a couple of times but every time it looks like the ice patch on a curve that stays in shade all winter will have an ice free strip so I can take out the scoot it snows, sigh. This winter, not a chance since we haven't had more than 4 days of sunshine in a row.

FWIW, I know some folks I consider hard core scooterists that have on occasion trailered scoot(s) to a rally. Usually because either a) they are bringing a show scoot (or more) in addition to the one they ride, or b) ride a 50cc, live 200+ miles away and have to be at work til 6pm the night before and back at 8am the day after. If they ride they miss all but Sat night activities. If they trailer they get to enjoy the rally.

So what happened to your leg then ?

I finally finished building my CBR 79 P200 stroker and fitted into the 67 GT rat. Of course it was not a one kick first start. I kicked the snot out of it with my right and left foot. I was getting frustrated and ready to take a break when I got the first..."puhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"...ohhhhhh...close...a couple more carb adjustments, clear the flooding, a bunch more kicks and it fired up....sweet!

Later that day it felt like I had pulled a muscle in my left calf...no big deal.

The next day I was sitting on the kitchen floor working on the fridge...still felt like a pulled muscle...I stood up and my left toes were numb...figured that I was sitting goofy and walked it off ...except it didn't walk off...then my entire left foot was numb...then intense pain in my calf and my left big toe started turning blue.

Bocette drove me to the ER and later that day I had surgery on my left leg to clear a clot then they put me into CCU. I still wasn't getting enough blood flow, still had a blue toe so they ran a CT scan and found clots in my groin.

Next surgery 2 days later was to slit the facia on my left leg for swelling, clear out a "humungous" clot from my groin and insert 2 kissing stents where the illiacs meet my aorta...woke up with 54 staples.

Believe it or not that is the short version!

All I can say is that there were too many "coincidences". In other words Someone was looking out for me! (Thanks Big Guy!).

I was told that I will never have 100% recovery, I still have some nerve and muscle damage...and may always...but I am very grateful for the recovery I have made! The meds make me bruise easily and really bleed when cut so I gear up even more than I used to...no more not putting on armored pants and boots to run 2 miles to the Depot...so I either ATG or take the truck.

I've pretty much kept this off line because I'm not looking for sympathy..this is life...and life is very good!

I just looked at the backward riding scooter dude. He was hardcore until he pulled out and answered his cell phone.

How can you tell if you're hardcore? That's a bit like asking how do you know when you're cool. If you think you are, you're probably not.

If you really are, you don't need the label.

I wouldn't say I'm hardcore, but I knew I had the disease after I bought my third scooter and fifth book on Vespas.

I am currently in transition - I have managed 5k miles on 3 different scoots, two of which I still have in the last year.

This year I plan on tripling that number and I can't stop looking for other scoots to buy and ride even though it's a total pipe dream each time I look.

So yeah. Transitory hardcore?

Also: I have been picking up stickers compulsively to someday put on my top boxes that I may never have.

Probably to you but to the 99% of scooterists that have seen versions of that over the years...not so much.

Can't we all just hold hands and sing happy songs? Let's not bring the bickering from the spark plug thread over to this thread.

I'm pretty sure the intent of the thread was to have fun and not to seriously debate what is a hardcore scooterist.
