I got a new ignition switch for my gts 250 only to find the old switch didn't want to be replaced.

Seems it should be an easy emplacement, unplug and pull out, then install the new switch...looks straight forward. Well the old one was stuck in the metal cylinder that houses the key cylinder and the switch. When I tried a little pressure it shattered leaving as a remainder the part that seats inside the metal cylinder flush with the edge,

That piece refuses to come out.

I was wondering how to remove the key cylinder from the metal housing so I might "tap" out the remaining plastic piece of the ignition switch...from the front?

Such a nice day to ride.

Did you remove the 'C' clip that holds the switch in place? If so the remainder of the plastics should just fall out.

A photo or two of your dilemma might help.

Actually yes
The retaining clip was the first thing I removed. I'll have to photograph it tonite after my shift. My brother, in his enthusiasm tried to access the piece with a screwdriver through the retaining clip a slot and broke off the lip...as I was explaining to him that the recess was where the clip seats.

Bloody hell - I've never, ever, seen one so rusty!

Time to dig out the remaining plastic with whatever comes to hand (hammers, chisels, Dremels, whatever), and then to work out how to hold a new switch in place - which should be feasible given a bit of lateral thinking, or even some glue...

Hi

I thought mine had a spot of corrosion but nothing like that. I had to take drastic action with a tiny chisel and break away the plastic eventually it broke away clean. I then had to spend a while rubbing down inside the tube so that the new switch would go in. As jimc said you are going to have to find a way of securing it.

hope you get it sorted

Yeah it's a horror show I know. I think I might use a hose clamp on it or something to try to secure the new one. Break it out...will do.

Ok
Got the old switch out, can't fit the new one in.

Is it possible that I have the wrong part. I noticed that the cylinder is notched out for the part to fit one way, and there is a bevel on the replacement switch that seems to go around the steering column... but it appears to be on the wrong side. The bevel is on the side with the groove for the retainer clip, but the column that it would seem the bevel is designed for is on the other side?

Is this correct?

Having a tough time... slipping... the part in.
