Kawasaki is launching their entry into the scooter scene. While it's a fairly generic modern style maxi scoot, it another option from a very established manufacturer. This is a true 300 (299cc).

Didn't I read somewhere that the J300 is a Kymco in Kawasaki green?

[EDIT]That doesn't make it bad, btw, it just makes it less Kawasaki[/EDIT]

It get's a big meh from me, but I am glad they are also jumping on the bandwagon.

More products means more diversity and scooters in the marketplace is a good thing.

Yes, I believe the Kawasaki is a re-badged (and possibly cosmetically enhanced) Kymco Downtown 300. And none the worse for that.

Engine, chassis and drive are all Kymco but I believe the special edition is the only one to have.

I should be riding one soon.

Nice looking bike. I was looking at some of the other video reviews but was that Dutch the guy was speaking? Anyway the step through appears narrow. I have enough problems with my MP3 500 step through when the tilt lock malfunctions. He did say Kymco Downtown a lot.

1) i like it but i see no mention of where is will be available, i assume no north american J300? I saw nothing on the Kawasaki web site about the scooter and dealer knows nothing about it.

2) i like that it is a Kawasaki. Good match for my Versys but..if it just a rebadged Kymco Downtown, why not just get one of those?

the Downtown 300 is a nice bike. A friend has one and that thing is pretty fast.

All of the reviews say that the Downtown is quick compared to the competition which is probably due to its lack of weight and a full contingent of cc's.
I saw the Kawasaki at a bike show a few weeks back and in black and grey it's really handsome.
I'm hoping to take the Kymco version on an " extended test ride" on May 10th so I'll report back on how that goes.

Here's a good question - Whose build quality do you rate higher, Kawasaki or Kymco ?

Kymco's DT 300 is one of their best, latest generation bikes. I ride with several people who have owned other scooters and now have a DT 300. All agree that their 300 is the best bike they have owned.

Kawasaki's bike does have body modifications and I think it looks like a Kawasaki should look.

Anything that increases the sale and appreciation of scooters is good for all of us.

I kind of like it, my wife does not. Which I find a bit funny, as when we were shopping for a scooter, the retro-looking Vespa appealed to me and she wanted the modern-looking BV250. Guess who won that one.......

I have grown to really like the BV, though.

At least the BV is an actual step through and looks like a scooter. I kind of like it to, but I kinda like bow ties too, but wouldn't be caught dead wearing one. I imagine for the Euro urban commuter it would be a fine ride, but nothing to wax nostalgic.

The Ninja 300 displacement is 296cc for their in-line 2-cylinder engine, so at 299 ccs, this is not the same engine.

I find those humps on maxi-scooters like this one are harder to get on than motorcycles. On many of these scooters the tail is actually quite high and so you can't easily swing your leg over it like a motorcycle. Also I take my Vespa off the center stand before I get onto it, but it is simple to just step across the platform. With these humped scooters, I might catch my foot and drop the scooter.

The engine is a Kymco engine.

I know what you mean about having to work a little harder to clear the engine hump. My BMW's hump is quite high. On those bikes you have to keep it on the center or side stand and then climb aboard. The Kymco People 300 has a pure step through design in a larger displacement scooter.

So what's worse, owning a Kawasaki and knowing that most of it is a Kymco or buying a Kymco and knowing that for just a little bit more you could of had a Kawasaki ?

I guess what it boils to is how deep does your brand prejudice go ?

Answers on a postcard.

If I had the choice, I'd buy the Kwak. Purely because of the dealer network and there is also a reasonable dealer (Bacon's) on the A12, just down the road from me in Newbury Park. I keep meaning to nip down there and try out a Z1000SX.

I'm pretty certain I'd do the same just because of the name on the side.

No doubt it's residual value will be higher.

I don't see a large market for it. It is too big for Asia and the other markets seem saturated with scooters. What Kawasaki might do though is what they do best...make a good product and squeeze out the competition. If your choice were a Vespa 300 for $6200 and a Kawasaki 300 for $5000, you might go with a Kawasaki especially if you had local support.

Kawasaki comes with a 1-year warranty and Kymco has a 2-year unless something changes for the Kawa scooter. Kawa pushes their Good Times Protection (extended warranty) for an additional 1-4 years. Kaw does that on motorcycles anyway.

The best thing about the J300 I can see is the seat looks comfy. Maybe it rides really well though. I would definitely test ride one if it were available.

It will sell very well in Europe, especially Italy and France. All vehicles come with at least a two year warranty in Europe and actually, due to the Sale of Goods Act in the UK, that warranty is much longer in reality. Things have to last a "reasonable" time, which can be up to seven years...

Where that kind of scooter sells very well.

Granted not so much in the US but they have spotted a gap in their range so it would only be sensible to fill it.

My Vespa dealer sells Kawasaki, too. I could rent one for a day for 50EUR. Cars are so much cheaper to rent.
