The new model will be known as the "Vespa Quattro Staggioni", or "Four Seasons", signifying the practicality of the new model to be used all year round.
Piaggio market research indicates that many Vespa owners shutter their scooters away for between four and six months of the year, particularly in North America, to avoid riding in inclement weather.
The Quattro Staggioni is a blend of Vespa's new small frame Primavera, married with Honda's 750cc engine from the NC motorcycle range. The transmission is Honda's twin-clutch N-CVT transmission. The new engine and transmission promises superb tractability and reliability, being based upon the unit in Honda's 1.4 litre Jazz/Fit city car.
For those bad weather days, the new scooter includes a world first - 4x4 outriggers. In bad weather, a sensor triggers two powered wheels which drop down from below the traditional Vespa side cowls, to essentially provide 4x4 levels of traction and grip.
High specification levels include ABS, ASR, powered and heated flyscreen and grips, built-in Sat-Nav, pop-up child seat with three-point seatbelt and built-in climate control for those warm summer days.
The new model is released today, April 1st, 2014 at a cost of just £9999 in the UK. Launch dates in North America to follow.
