First ride this season look down speedometer not working. Disconnect from front wheel cable seems free and turning. Any ideas? 06 20000 miles.

Yep!

It's either disconnected at the headset or the little white plastic gear is stuck in hardened grease at the hub.

I'm guessing the latter.

Best,

when you turn the cable at the bottom, does the speedometer needle move?

i'll throw one more out there for your-- end of plastic cable top hat busted off in speedo housing.

no matter how you slice it, you're going to have to open the headset.

pull all that mess apart and see what's up. visually, you'll be able to see if the cable is disconnected or sheared at the top. if that checks out okay, you get to go down town where the real party is. cleaning the petrified grease and gunk out along with the melted plastic makes for a fun afternoon!

best,

When my GT200 speedometer crapped out, I found that the small square plastic tip of the drive cable had broken off in the instrument. I fished the broken off tip out with a pointed set of tweezers and replaced the cable. I had to buy the complete cable and housing since they apparently do not sell the cable only.

thank you for the suggestions I think I will start @ the bottom and work my way up. I already opened it @ the hub I think I will spray some pb blaster in there to see if it frees it up.

yeah... no... don't spray anything down in there.

if it's stuck it's already wasted. spraying some PB down in there is going to do you more harm than good-- it'll get past the seals on the rotor and diminish braking force; or, even better, it'll loosen up all that crud and float it right into the seals and bearings down there.

then you get to spend hours dicking around with things that shouldn't need any type, kind or sort of dicking.

if you're already apart at the hub: pull the cover, rubber plug and brass spacer. if you rotate the wheel the plastic pinion should roll back up and out and you can inspect it. if comes out easy, awesome sauce. check the end of the cable isn't sheared down there. oh, it's stuck down in there? wow, that sucks. welcome to my world.

does the bike still run and drive? excellent, take a quick ride down to the package store and get you a sixer of something decent or a pint of vodka... you're gonna need it...

oh you're back? right then, let's get to work! crack a beer and then prop that bad boy up (the pet carrier will do) and pull the wheel, then yank off the caliper-- it's okay to just let it dangle there, it ain't going nowheres, then go ahead and get the hub and disc ass'y off there too. we're going all the way in there. now pull the lower bolts off the shock and let the whole assembly swing down. cool. okay, now here's the hardest part of it all: get out your snap ring pliers and get that little external ring that's all the way in there-- if you're blind like me, go ahead and get your flashlight ahead of time. you can be sure that if that pinion is waxed, then the locating holes and that entire clip are covered in grease that's totally nasty and hardened. anyway, cuss at it for a bit and then take a few pulls off your beer. so, like a beer later you've got off... go ahead and pull the special D washer (don't lose this) and then you can pull the whole caliper carrier off... now is when you're gonna need the rest of those beers...

clean all that crusty, nasty, hardened grease out of the caliper carrier-- but for the love of GAWD don't EFF up the bearings and seals while doing so. oh, and clean all the bits of pinion/melted plastic out of the hub gear too, cuz yeah, that need to get some love as well or you're gonna be doing it all again.

okay, you're done? rad. now put it all back together; assembly is the reverse. lube everything and don't pinch none of them seals. the hub nut goes on dry-- no loctite or anything. torque it in steps: 15, 25, 50, 65, 70~75 while spinning it. torque, spin, spin, torque, spin, spin, spin, torque, spin, spin. don't forget the castle keeper AND a NEW split pin. so help me if you don't use a new split pin... *shakes fist*

the rest of the speedo stuff gets lubed and installed AFTER everything else is together. DO NOT put any loctite on the plate hold down screw, it's got a lock washer and that's enough. so help me if you put loctite on that... *stares daggers*

now test ride it. does it work? awesome! you can forget about all that mess for another 20K! oh, it doesn't? man... better check the top at the headset.

hope that helps!

The speedometer on my 250 quite working a couple of weeks ago and I was thinking about trying to fix it myself.

...... but (LOL) after reading this thread, I think I'll just mount my GPS on the handlebars and drive 137 mile to the nearest Vespa repair shop and let them do it.

FYI, thread posts made it sound like this was a hard fix. Bought a new speedo cable, also doesn't need that plastic hat mentioned as the new one doesn't need it. Albeit, mine is a GT200 but assuming they are the same. Remove screws holding the panel facing you as if you are riding. Just pull it back, no need to fully remove. 8mm bolt holding the cable into the front wheel area. I had to use vice grips to pull mine out as it was stuck. Remove and feed new cable thru the same way it's routed originally. Done.

threading a new cable is not a hard fix at all, just more of like an inconvenience regarding screws and plastics. it's when something truly goes sideways that it becomes a pain in all nine of your assholes.

removing a melted speedo gear and cleaning/servicing the caliper bracket is in and unto itself a very special circle of hell.
